Question 2.
What does the poet urge to people?

He assures them that it would not be long. Perhaps they would find it surprisingly, short. He is sure that his song would not hold or detain them for a long time.

All the people were sure that the man would not survive. But nothing of that kind happened. The man recovered of the bite. It was the dog that died in the end. It proved that the man was more dangerous and poisonous than the mad dog.

Question 5.
Point out the element of satire in the poem.
Answer.
In ‘An Elegy on the Death of a Mad Dog’, Oliver Goldsmith makes use of satire in a very effective manner. It is satirical that the man who was admired as a generous and kind hearted man was actually a wolf in disguise. Normally, the man bitten by a mad dog and having such sore wounds hardly survives. Ironically it is not the man who dies but it is the dog that dies in the end. The poem is an ‘elegy’ in a satirical way. Satirically, it is an elegy not written on the man but on the death of a mad dog.
