Why was it difficult to rob Anil?

Answer.
Anil was different from the greedy, the rich and poor. If the theft was discovered by him, he would not show fear, anger or acceptance. He would show only a touch of sadness. The cause of this sadness would be not for the loss of money but for the loss of trust. So it was difficult to rob him.
अनिल लालची, धनी तथा गरीब लोगों से भिन्न था। यदि कोई उसे लूटता तो, उसमें भय, गुस्सा अथवा स्वीकार की भावना नहीं आती। उसमें केवल उदासी की भावना आती थी। यह उदासी पैसे की हानि के कारण नहीं, बल्कि विश्वास की कमी के कारण होती थी। अतः उसे लूटना कठिन था।

Anil gave Hari Singh, who was a thief, food and shelter in his house. Hari Singh was given a key to the door. He could come and go as he pleased. He also used to purchase the day’s supplies and make a little profit. Although Anil knew it, he never seemed to mind it. This shows that Anil was the most trusting person for Hari Singh.

Why did Hari Singh think that he should go back to Anil?

Answer.
When Hari Singh missed the train, he had no idea where to spend the night. The only person he knew at the place was Anil whom he had robbed. He also knew that if the theft was exposed to him, he would show only his sadness for the loss of trust. Besides, Anil taught him writing to improve his life. So, he decided to go back to Anil.

Answer.
Anil was a writer by profession. He was twenty-five years old. He wrote for a magazine. But he made money by fits and starts. He would often borrow for a week and lend the next. He always kept worrying about the next cheque. But as soon as the cheque arrived, he would go out and celebrate the day. Anil had the heart of a writer also. Although his income was meagre, he brought Hari Singh home and provided him food and shelter.
अनिल व्यवसाय से लेखक था। वह पच्चीस वर्ष का था। वह एक पत्रिका के लिए लिखता था। किंतु वह अनियमित तरीके से धनोपार्जन करता था। वह अक्सर एक सप्ताह के लिए उधार लेता तथा अगले सप्ताह उधार देता था। वह अपने अगले चेक के बारे में चिंतामग्न रहता था, किंतु जैसे ही चेक आती तो वह बाहर निकल जाता तथा दिन का खूब आनंद उठाता। अनिल के पास एक लेखक का हृदय भी था यद्यपि उसकी आय कम थी, तथापि वह हरि सिंह को अपने घर लाया तथा उसे खाना और शरण दिया।

Answer.
Hari Singh was only fifteen years when he met Anil. Though he was in the wrestling ground, he was not enjoying it. He approached Anil and told him his fake name. Actually he often changed his name and place to save himself from the police and the previous employer. This time he targeted Anil as he needed food and shelter. He even cooked for Anil although he had no knowledge of cooking. He was an excellent face reader. He targeted the writer, got room in his house and robbed him. His acts are the evidences of a successful thief. Even the police had failed to catch hold of him.

Describe Hari Singh’s reactions after the departure of the train?

Answer.
After the departure of Lucknow Express, Hari Singh found himself standing alone on the deserted platform. He had already missed the chance to get away. Now he had no idea where to spend the night. He had no friends who could help him. He did not even want to stay in the small hotel near the station so that people might become curious of him. He had food and shelter provided by a man but he robbed the man in return. The only person he knew really was the main to whom he had robbed. Finally he left the station and walked through the bazaar.
लखनऊ एक्सप्रेस ट्रेन के चले जाने के बाद, हरि सिंह सुनसान प्लेफॉर्म पर अकेला खड़ा था। प्रस्थान करने का अवसर उसने खो दिया था। वह समझ नहीं पा रहा था कि रात कहाँ गुजारे। ऐसा कोई भी व्यक्ति नहीं था, जो उसकी सहायता कर सके। वह लोगों की नजरों में नहीं आना चाहता था, इसलिए वह स्टेशन के निकट स्थिति किसी होटल में ठहरना। नहीं चाहता था। उसे किसी ने खाना तथा रहने का स्थान उपलब्ध कराया था, किंतु लौटते वक्त उसने उस आदमी को लूट लिया था। एकमात्र व्यक्ति जिसे वास्तव में वह जानता था, उसे उसने लूट लिया था। अंत में, वह स्टेशन से निकला तथा बाजार की तरफ निकल पड़ा।

Anil is an easy-going person. We find many good qualities in his character. He is a very honest and simpie man. He is a writer by profession. He writes for a magazine. He earns his livelihood through writing. He is so humble and helping nature man that he gives Hari Singh shelter in his own house. He keeps faith in Hari Singh, although he does not have any clear information about him. Although he knew that Hari Singh had started saving money from daily supplies, he did not tell him anything. He prepared tea himself and served it to Hari Singh. He very gentle. He was not greedy. When he got some money he spent it on his friends. He taught Hari Singh to write his name and leter to write sentences and to add numbers. He knew if Hari Singh would get knowledge of writing, he could lead a respectable life. Thus we find many good qualities in Anil’s character.
The narrator of the story was a thief. He was a little boy of fifteen. He had worked for different employers. He used to change his place after cheating his owner. Now he made Anil his friend because he needed a place to live in. He worked for Anil. He bought things from the market and also saved a rupee a day from this. But Anil’s company brought a change in his mind. Anil started to teach him because he wanted to change his reputation in the society. But one day he stole Anil’s money and went out of the room. He wanted to go to Lucknow but he didn’t go. His conscience stopped him from doing so. His thoughts had completely changed. Now he wanted to lead a respectable life. He went back to Anil’s room and put the money back. Thus, Hari Singh changed himself.
