Answer.
During the Spanish Civil War, the army captain told the people of San Carlos to leave the town because the Fascists were to attack the town. So to flee the advancing Fascists, carts trucks, men, women and children were crossing the pontoon bridge. The mule-drawn carts were staggering up the steep bank from the bridge and the soldiers were pushing the carts.

After doing his work, the narrator returned over the bridge. There he noticed that there were not so many carts at that time. Only a few people were walking on foot and the old man was sitting by the side of the road.

I am very depressed to see the circumstances of the people of our town San Carlos. Due to the Civil War people became refugees. People have left the town leaving behind their home, property and friends and relatives. All people became homeless. Many animals are dying because their masters fled the town. A 76-year old man after walking 12 km with his animals has got tired and sat by the side of the road. He is so tired that he is unable to walk any further with his animals.
