लिखित अभिव्यक्ति की जितनी भी विधाएँ हैं, उनमें Letter Writing (पत्र-लेखन) का विशिष्ट स्थान है। यह अपनी बात को दूसरों तक पहुँचाने का एक powerful medium (सशक्त माध्यम) है। आप का युग internet (इंटरनेट) का युग है। Internet के बढ़ते प्रभाव के कारण परंपरागत ढंग से किए जाने वाले letter writing (पत्र लेखन) में कमी आ गई है। परंतु नए नाम e-mail (ई-मेल) के साथ पत्र लेखन विधा का काफी विस्तार हुआ। आज अधिक-से-अधिक कार्य internet की सहायता से हो रहा है। तथापि चाहे हाथ से letter writing का कार्य किया जाए या internet के माध्यम से, letter writing एक ऐसी विधा है, जो लेखक और पाठक के बीच intimate relationship (आत्मीय संबंध) उत्पन्न करने में प्रभावकारी है।

- Simplicity (सरलता): पत्रों की भाषा जितनी सरल और सुबोध होगी, पत्र उतने ही comprehensible (ग्राह्य) होंगे। पत्र की भाषा ऐसी होनी चाहिए कि समझने के लिए पाठक को vocabulary (शब्दकोश) का सहारा न लेना पड़े।
- Clarity (स्पष्टता): पत्र में जो कुछ भी कहा जाए स्वत: स्पष्ट होना चाहिए।
- Certainty (निश्चयात्मकता): Certainty से तात्पर्य है कि पत्र को पढ़कर पाठक के मन में किसी भी प्रकार की Doubt (शंका) न उठे।।
- Brevity (संक्षिप्तता): पत्र में जो बातें लिखी जाएँ. वे संक्षिप्त में ही लिखी जाएँ अर्थात वे गागर में सागर भरने के समान होनी चाहिए।
- Originality (मौलिकता): पत्र में रटे-रटाए या textual sentences (पुस्तकीय वाक्य) नहीं होने चाहिए। पत्र लेखक पत्र में जो कुछ लिखें वह मौलिक होना चाहिए।
- Objectivity (उद्देश्यपूर्णता): प्रत्येक लेखक का कोई-न-कोई उद्देश्य (purpose) होता है। अतः पत्र को लिखते समय लेखक को पत्र के उद्देश्य का ध्यान रखना चाहिए। पत्र लेखक को स्मरण रखना चाहिए कि वह पत्र किसके लिए और क्यों लिख रहा है।
