What does the story teach you ?
कहानी आपको क्या सिखाती है?
Answer:
This story is about the law of self-perseveration and the danger of friendship between unequals. An elephant makes friendship with the man. The elephant requests the man to allow him to keep his trunk inside the hut to protect him from the torrential rain. The man agrces. The elephant throws him out and occupies the hut. At last the man protects himself his wisdom. The moral of the story is that one can protect one’s interests only by making good use of one’s own resources.

यह कहानी स्वयं का अस्तित्व बनाये रखने तथा असमान मित्रता के खतरों के सम्बन्ध में है। एक हाथी एक मनुष्य से मित्रता करता है। हाथी मूसलाधार वर्षा से बचने के लिए, उस आदमी से अपनी सुंड को झोंपड़ी के अन्दर रखने के लिए निवेदन करता है। वह आदमी सहमत हो जाता है। हाथी उसे बाहर फेंक देता है तथा झोंपड़ी पर अधिकार कर लेता है । अन्ततः आदमी अपनी बुद्धिमता से उनसे बचता है। कहानी की शिक्षा यह है कि कोई अपने अधिकारों की रक्षा केवल अपने स्वयं के संसाधनों के सही उपयोग। से ही कर सकता है।

“Peace is costly, but it’s worth the expense.” Explain.
“शान्ति कीमती है किन्तु इसका मूल्य महँगा है”। समझाइये।
Answer:
“Peace is costly, but its worth the expense”, means that peace cannot be achieved easily. We have to make sacrifices to get peace. Without, sacrifices, peace can not be got. The man whose huts have been occupied by the animals, makes a plan to get peace. He makes a large hut. Gradually all the animals came and occupy it. They are all in the hut. Then he sets the hut on fire and burns it to the ground. Thus he gets peace.

“शान्ति कीमती है किन्तु इसका मूल्य महँगा है’ का अर्थ यह है कि शान्ति सरलता से प्राप्त नहीं हो सकती है। शान्ति प्राप्त करने के लिए हमें बलिदान करने होते हैं। बिना बलिदानों के शान्ति प्राप्त नहीं हो सकती है। वह मनुष्य जिसकी झोंपड़ियों पर जानवरों के द्वारा अधिकार कर लिया गया है, शांति प्राप्त करने के लिए एक योजना बनाता है। वह एक बड़ी झोंपड़ी बनाता है। धीरे-धीरे सभी जानवर आते हैं तथा उस पर अधिकार कर लेते हैं। वे सभी झोंपड़ी में होते हैं। फिर वह झोंपड़ी में आग लगा देता है जो जल कर जमीन पर गिर जाती है। इस प्रकार से वह शान्ति प्राप्त करता है।

The man was not allowed to any representation in the Commission because no one from his side was well enough educated to understand the intricacy of jungle law.

Answer:
There is one instance of bribery in the story. The Commission was hearing the case of the man and Mr. Elephant. All the members enjoyed a delicious meal at the expense of Mr. Elephant.

इस कहानी में रिश्वतखोरी का एक उदाहरण है। आयोग के समक्ष श्री हाथी व उस मनुष्य के मुकदमे की सुनवाई हो रही थी। तमाम सदस्यों ने श्री हाथी के खर्चे पर स्वादिष्ट भोजन का आनन्द लिया।

शेर अपने राज्य में शांति व अमन चैन’ को रखने के लिए क्या करता है?
Answer:
There is going a heated argument between the man and his friend, the elephant. In this turmoil the lion comes along roaring and says in a loud voice; “Don’t you all know that I am the king of the jungle! How dare any one disturb the peace of my kingdom?’ Then the lion commands his ministers to appoint a Commission of Enquiry to go thoroughly into that matter and report accordingly.

मनुष्य तथा उसके मित्र, हाथी के बीच में आवेगपूर्ण तर्क चल रहा है। इस हो-हल्ले में शेर दहाड़ता हुआ आता है और जोर की आवाज में कहता है, क्या तुम सब लोगों को नहीं मालूम कि मैं जंगले का राजा हूँ ! किसने मेरे राज्य में शांति भंग करने का साहस किया है।” फिर शेर अपने मंत्रियों को इस मामले की तहकीकात करने के लिए और तदनुसार रिपोर्ट देने के लिए एक जांच-समिति नियुक्त करने का आदेश देता है।

Discuss the scene of taking evidence before the Commission.
आयोग के सामने लिए गए गवाही के दृश्य का वर्णन कीजिए।
Answer:
The Rt. Hon. Mr. Elephant is first called. He says that the man has invited him to save his hut from being blown away by a hurricane. Then he turns the undeveloped space to a more economic use by sitting in it himself. After it the Commission calls Mr. Hyena and other elders of the jungle who all support what Mr. Elephant has said. Then they call the man but he is not allowed to say more and he has to leave the possession of the hut.

सबसे पहले सम्माननीय हाथी को बुलाया जाता है। वह कहता है कि मनुष्य ने उसे तूफान से अपनी झोंपड़ी को उड़ने से बचाने के लिए, आमन्त्रित किया है। फिर वह इसके अन्दर बैठ कर अविकसित स्थान को अधिक आर्थिक उपयोगी बनाता है। इसके बाद आयोग श्री लकड़बग्घा और जंगल के अन्य वरिष्ठ लोगों को बुलाता है, वे-जो हाथी ने कहा है, उसका समर्थन करते हैं। फिर वे मनुष्य को बुलाते हैं लेकिन उसे अधिक बोलने की अनुमति नहीं दी जाती है और उसे झोंपड़ी का स्वामित्व छोड़ना पड़ता है।

What does the King of Jungle say to the man ?
जंगल का राजा उस आदमी से क्या कहता है?
Answer:
He says to the man ‘You have done well by establishing friendship with my people, especially with the elephant, who is one of my honourable ministers of state. Do not grumble any more, your hut is not lost to you. Wait until the sitting of my Imperial Commission, and there you will be given plenty of opportunity to state your case. I am sure that you will be pleased with the findings of the Commission’.

वह उस आदमी से कहता है, “तुमने मेरे व्यक्तियों से विशेषतः हाथी से जो राज्य के मेरे सम्माननीय मंत्रियों में से एक है, से मित्रता करके अच्छा किया है। अब और अधिक मत बड़बड़ाओ, तुम्हारी झोंपड़ी तुमसे वंचित नहीं की जायेगी। मेरे शाही आयोग की मीटिंग की प्रतीक्षा करो और तुम्हें अपने मामले का पक्ष रखने का बहुत अवसर प्राप्त होगा। मुझे पूरा विश्वास है कि तुम कमेटी की सिफारिशों से खुश होओगे।”

Question 4.
Discuss the verdict declared by the Commission of Enquiry.
जांच-समिति के द्वारा घोषित किये गए फैसले का वर्णन कीजिए।
Answer:
The Commission of Enquiry declared its verdict that they considered it necessary to arrange a compromise to suit both parties. Mr. Elephant would continue his occupation of the man’s hut but they gave the man permission to look for a site where he could build another hut more suited to his needs and they would see that he was well protected.

जाँच समिति ने अपने फैसले की घोषणा की कि वे इसे आवश्यक समझते थे कि दोनों पक्षकारों के लिए एक उपयुक्त समझौते की व्यवस्था करें। आदमी की झोंपड़ी पर श्री हाथी का अधिकार जारी रहेगा, किन्तु उन्होंने आदमी को अनुमति दी कि वह एक स्थान की तलाश करे जहाँ वह दूसरी झोंपड़ी बना सके जो उसकी आवश्यकताओं को पूरा करती हो और वे देखेंगे कि उसकी अच्छी तरह सुरक्षा हो।
