The frame maker is a silent and hard-working man. He gives only laconic answers to the questions his customers ask and strongly discourages casual friends who try to intrude on his zone of silence with their idle gossip. He is always seen sitting hunched up, surrounded by a confusion of cardboard pieces, bits of wood, glass sheets, boxes of nails etc. He has learnt by lang experience that his customers never come punctually.

It is a story of a frame maker who is asked to frame the photograph of a revered elder. The customer who brings this photograph is very particular about the frame as the elder is his patron. In a very light hearted humour, the writer satirises the way the customer gives excessive importance to the frame. At last he does not pay his attention to the changed photograph on the contrary he pays attention to the frame that it is not oval cut.

The frame maker does his work in a shop named “The Modern Frame Works’ which is situated in a gap between a drug store and a radio repair shop.

फ्रेम बनाने वाला अपना कार्य ‘द मॉडर्न फ्रेमं वर्कस’ नामक एक दुकान में करता है जो एक औषधि के गोदाम तथा एक रेडियो सुधार की दुकान के बीच की जगह में स्थित है।

Why was there not an inch of space uncovered ?
वहाँ एक ईंच भी जगह खाली क्यों नहीं थी?
Answer:
There was not an inch of space uncovered because of the pictures like gods, saints, hockey players, children, cheap prints of the Mona Lisa, national leaders, wedding couples, Urdu calligraphy etc.

Answer:
When a glass-cutter or a pencil stub is lost, Datta uncoils from his posture. He gropes impatiently for it. Many times he has to stand up and shake his dhoti vigorously to dislodge the lost object. This operation rocks the whole shop, setting the pictures on the walls gently swinging.

जब एक कॉच-कटर या एक पेंसिल का टुकड़ा गुम हो जाता है, दत्ता अपनी मुद्रा से, कुंडली खोलकर सीधा होता है। वह बेचैनी से उसे टटोलता है। अनेक बार उसे खड़ा होना पड़ता है तथा गुम हो चुकी वस्तु को बाहर निकालने के लिए जोरदार ढंग से अपनी धोती को हिलाना पड़ता है। यह कार्य पूरी दुकान को, दीवारों पर ढंग से जड़ी हुई तस्वीरों को हिला देता है।

Answer:
When Datta loses the pencil stub, he sweeps his hand all round him impatiently, scattering fragments of glass and wood. False shapes that he mistakes for the pencil harasses him to no end and stokes his anger. Frustrated in all his attempts to find it, he finally stands up to shake the folds of his dhoti. Then he upsets a tin containing white enamel paint and it falls right on the sacred photograph of the old man.

When a tin cantaining white enamel paint fell right on the sacred photograph of the old man, Datta stood transfixed. He stared at the disaster at his feet as if he had suddenly lost all faculty of movement. He could not being himself even to avert his eyes from the horror which he seemed to be cruelly forced to view. Then his spectacles clouded with perspiration and helpfully screened his vision.

Datta had already fallen a tin containing white enamel paint, right on the sacred photograph of the old man. Then he set about rescuing the picture in such desperate hurry that he made a worse mess of it. He rubbed the picture so hard with a cloth that he peeled off thin strips of filmy coating from its surface. Before he realised what he had done half the old man’s face and nearly all of his turban were gone. So, he sat with both hands clutching his head.
