Men and women are tall and strong in frame, although the women’s feet are bound. In the first glance in the twilight they seem well enough, but when one looks more closely, they are the faces of people starving and moving now in despair to a last hope. They see nothing of the strange sights of a new city because they are too near death to see anything. No new sight can move their curiosity.
आकार में पुरुष तथा महिलाएँ लम्बी तथा ताकतवर हैं, यद्यपि महिलाओं के पैर सीमित (छोटे) हैं। सूर्यास्त के समय पहली नजर में वे अच्छे प्रतीत होते हैं लेकिन जब कोई अधिक ध्यान से देखता है, वे चेहरे भूख से मर रहे लोगों के हैं और अब एक अन्तिम उम्मीद की निराशा में हैं। वे नये शहर के किसी भी विचित्र दृश्य को नहीं देखते हैं क्योंकि वे मृत्यु के इतने नजदीक हैं कि कुछ भी नहीं देख सकते हैं। कोई भी नया दृश्य उनकी जिज्ञासा को नहीं हिला सकता है।

He is worried about the seed and his only grandson. When he is given a copper coin and a silver bit, he spends only the copper coin so that he may buy seed for the land and his grandson. He does not eat noodles and saves the silver bit for his future generation.

Discuss the scenes of the refugees’ camps.

Answer:
There were several hundreds of refugees passing at that moment. The camps were full of them. They fed after a fashion, clothed somehow and sheltered in mats in great camps outside the city wall. At any hour of the day lines of ragged men and women and a few children could be seen making their way towards the camps.
उस क्षण अनेक सैकड़ों शरणार्थी वहाँ से गुजर रहे थे। शिविर उनसे भरे हुए थे। उन्होंने एक विधान के बाद भोजन खाया, किसी न किसी प्रकार से कपड़े पहने तथा शहर की दीवार के बाहर बड़े शिविरों की चटाइयों में शरण ली। दिन के किसी भी समय अत्यधिक थके हुए पुरुषों, महिलाओं और कुछ बच्चों को शिविरों की तरफ बढ़ते हुए देखा जा सकता था।

The women had bands of the same plain blue stuff wrapped like kerchiefs about their heads.

Every man refugee had a burden on his shoulder. It was always bedding, quilts made of the blue cotton stuff and padded. Clothing and bedding were clean and strongly made. On top of every folded quilt, with a bit of mate between, was an iron cauldron. Those cauldrons had doubtless been taken from the earthen ovens of the village. But in no basket was there a vestige of food.

He was a little wizened old man. Even he carried a load of a folded.quilt and a cauldron. Although the load was light, it was too much for the old man. It was evident that in usual times he would be beyond the age of work. His breath whistled as he staggered along. He strained his eyes to watch those who were ahead of him lest he should be left behind. His old wrinkled face was set in a sort of gasping agony.
