Answer the following questions in about 150 words each :

Question 1.
“Liberty is not a personal affair only, but a social contract.” Explain this statement with reference to the context.
Answer:
Reference to Context-These lines have been taken from A.G. Gardiner’s famous essay On the Rule of the Road’. In these lines the essayist talks about the liberty. Explain – Liberty is not a personal affair only but it is a social contract. If a person has the liberty to walk in the middle of the road, then what will come out will be a universal chaos. Everybody will get in everybody else’s way and nobody will get anywhere.

Individual liberty will have become social disorder. Liberty, therefore, has to be a social contract. It is an accommodation of the rights and feelings of others. A curtailment of personal liberty is necessary to make our liberty a reality. Critical Note-These simple lines provide us a great message about liberty. How can we live in a harmonious society is told to us. The words selected are simple. The language structure is easy to understand.

Question 2.
Do you agree with the author’s views on liberty? Give reasons for your answer.
Answer:
The author talks about liberty in individual and liberty on social contract. We live in a free society, but our freedom is limited upto an extent. Our individual freedom is curtailed when our social liberty comes. The human being is free to walk on a road but he let the others walk also. This individual freedom is limited. We are free to eat, dress and live in our own way. But we cannot interfere into the freedom of others. A man is a social animal. He cannot live without society. Thus others also need the same kind of liberty. When one plays trombone, it needs to be played at a selected time.

A contract in our society is made with the view that one will not interfere into others business. I cannot play the trombone at night when others are sleeping quietly because it is an interference into others’ freedom. One has to respect the rights and feelings of others. In this way we can maintain harmony in our society. Those who disturb this harmony, law punishes them.

Answer the following questions in 60 words each :

Question 1.
How can we say that a policeman on a road is the symbol of liberty?
Answer:
A policeman on a road is the symbol of liberty because he asks the people to use liberty in the limited manner. He prevents the people from using the road according to their uncontrolled wish. In the absence of the policemen people will break the rules of road and there would be a chaos and nobody would get anywhere. In this way we are sure about our freedom that the policeman will not let others encroach into others freedom.

Question 2.
What according to the author, is the basis of judging ourselves as civilized or uncivilized?

Answer:
On the basis of judging ourselves whether we are civilized or uncivilized according to our behaviour, there are some matters which are small and big where we behave in a unique manner. They are basically related to the freedom of others and that tell us how civilzed we are.

Question 4.
Why is it necessary to curtail personal freedom?
Answer:
It is necessary to curtail personal freedom because we want to create a social order. This social order makes the real meaning of our liberty. The liberty without control can be disorder everywhere. In this way that liberty will be meaningless. Liberty needs control of any law and order agency.

Question 5.
How can we live in Harmony?
Answer:
We can live in harmony only if we accommodate the rights and feelings of others. Liberty cannot be a personal affair only, it has to be a social contract. Liberty can be realised in a society if every individual agrees to a curtailment of his personal freedom in order to accommodate the rights, feelings and liberties of others only by doing so we can live in harmony.

Question 6.
What qualifies our personal liberty of action?
Answer:
Our personal liberty of action is qualified by other people’s liberty. We all can live in harmony if we carefully accommodate our liberty to the liberties of others. A reasonable consideration for the rights or feelings of others is the foundation of social conduct.

What is the foundation of social conduct?
Answer:
When we start to consider about others in a very serious and considerable manner, at that time we are very sensitive. The society responds them in the same way. Good persons are always honoured and rewarded appropriately. Bad persons always face punishment. Thus our reasonable, considerable behaviour is the basis of our social conduct.
