Answer:
The meaning of the word ‘Svayamvara’ is choosing her husband by a girl herself. It is a practice in which a girl chooses the husband of her own choice from among a group of suitors.
‘स्वयंवर’ शब्द का अर्थ है किसी कन्या द्वारा अपना पति स्वयं चुनना। यह एक प्रथा है जिसमें कन्या बहुत सारे प्रणयार्थियों में से अपनी पसंद का पति चुनती है।

The parents had a daughter who whistled. They grieved because they thought that there was no possibility of getting a man who would marry a girl who whistled.

‘Most of the suitors did not accept the fact that they were fairly beaten’. Why? Explain. How does it reflect the Indian society?
‘अधिकांश प्रणयार्थियों ने इस तथ्य को स्वीकार नहीं किया कि वे भली-भाँति हरा दिये गये थे।’ क्यों ? स्पष्ट कीजिए। यह भारतीय समाज को कैसे प्रतिबिम्बित करता है?
Answer:
The princess was good at whistling. She defeated a crowd of suitors in the whistling contest. When she asked them if they were defeated fairly, most of them said that they were not. They attributed their defeat to magic or some trick. It has been an age long belief in India that men are by nature superior to women and this belief has its roots so deep in our society that even if a woman proves her superiority, men are reluctant to accept it. This very tendency is being reflected in the non-acceptance of an obvious defeat. Men think themselves to be superior to women and do not like to accept their defeat. In this way, the writer discloses the feeling of superiority present among men in Indian society and tells that they consider women second-grade creatures.
राजकुमारी सीटी बजाने में माहिर थी। सीटी बजाने की स्पर्धा में उसने प्रणयार्थियों की भीड़ को परास्त कर दिया। जब उसने उनसे पूछा कि क्या उन्हें उचित प्रकार से हरा दिया गया है तो अधिकांश ने कहा कि ‘नहीं’। उन्होंने अपनी हार को किसी जादू या चतुराई के माथे मढ़ा। भारत में यह युगों पुराना विश्वास रहा है। कि पुरुष स्वाभाविक रूप से ही महिलाओं से श्रेष्ठ होते हैं और इस विश्वास की जड़े समाज में इतनी गहरी हैं। कि भले ही कोई महिला अपनी श्रेष्ठता सिद्ध कर दे तो भी हम स्वीकार नहीं करते हैं। इस स्पष्ट हार की अस्वीकृति में यही प्रवृत्ति प्रतिबिम्बित हो रही है। पुरुष अपने आप को महिलाओं से श्रेष्ठ मानते हैं और हार को स्वीकार नहीं करते हैं। इस प्रकार लेखिका भारतीय समाज में पुरुषों के मध्य व्याप्त श्रेष्ठता की भावना को प्रकट करती है और बताती है कि वे महिलाओं को दूसरे दर्जे का प्राणी समझते हैं।

The story ‘Svayamvara’ focuses on the fact that certain set roles are assigned to women in Indian society and if they want a little more freedom, society opposes them. Her parents and members of the family become unhappy. For the smooth running of a family and society, it is also necessary to know what a woman expects of her husband. The story tells us that a woman likes a man who believes in gender equality, values her talents, gives importance to her qualities and gracefully accepts his own shortcomings. The significance of this story lies in the fact that it aims at evolving a better family life in which a husband does not adhere to old and trusted values. The writer of this story is a woman and only a woman knows the feelings and expectations of women well. Hence the importance of this story is considerable.

Yes, I like the story ‘Svayamvara’, because it inspires us to raise our voice against gender inequality and stresses the fact that women should have a proper place in society. It also underlines the fact that certain set roles are assigned to women in Indian society and if they want a little more freedom, the parents and members of society become unhappy. Men think that they are naturally superior to women. The story emphasises the fact that women are equally competent. They must be allowed to do everything they wish. If they are capable, they will certainly excel. It is good that in the present scenario, we can see many parents, family members and husbands who support women in bringing out their talent. For example, Mahavir Singh from Jhajjar (Haryana) motivated his three daughters to become world-class wrestlers. At present they are famous as the Foghat sisters.
