Describe the condition of the Ndume Central School before and after Michael Obi.
Answer:
Before Michael Obi’s appointment, Ndume Central School was an unprogressive school. It was backward in every sense of the word. Mr Obi and his wife put their whole attention into the task of improving it. He had two aims – a high standard of teaching and to turn the school campus into a place of beauty and worked accordingly. Their dream-gardens came to life with the coming of the rains and blossomed. Beautiful hibiscus and allamanda hedges in brilliant red and yellow marked out the carefully tended school compound from the rank neighbourhood bushes. He planted heavy sticks closely across the path at the two places where it entered and left the school premises. These were further strengthened with barbed wire. In this way, he closed the path that crossed the school campus.

Question 2.
Describe the character sketch of Obi.
Answer:
Michael Obi was a handsome young man with high aspirations. He wanted to excel in the field of education. He had sound secondary education which designated him a “pivotal teacher” in the official records. He was considered to be a very distinguished headmaster in the mission field. He would frankly condemn narrow views of the older and less-educated people. He did not approve of baseless and irrational beliefs, which were rife in society. He had great energy but looked weak. He sometimes surprised people with sudden bursts of physical energy. His deep-set eyes had an extraordinary power of penetration. He was only twenty-six but looked thirty or more. He worked hard for the Ndume Central School and changed it according to his aim.

Question 3.
Why were the school building and hedges ruined?
Answer:
The Headmaster Michael Obi closed the path that passed across the school compound. The village priest suggested reopening the path but Michael refused to do so. According to Obi, it was a baseless idea and the whole purpose of the school was to eradicate just such beliefs. He did not allow the reopening of the path. Three days later a young woman died in the village in childbirth. A diviner was consulted who prescribed heavy sacrifices to pacify ancestors who were insulted by the fence. Next day the beautiful hedges were torn up right around the school, the flowers were trampled to death and one of the school buildings was pulled down. It was reported that the misguided zeal of the new headmaster had caused a tribal-war situation between the school and the village.

B. Answer the following questions in 125 words each:

Question 1.
Compare and contrast Michael with the village priest.
Answer:
Both Michael and the village priest are ardent supporters of the values their generations stand for both Michael and the village priest occupy places of importance in the society. They are supposed to enlighten people. But as far as their convictions are concerned, they stand out in contrast. Michael is educated and well-mannered while the village priest is ill-mannered and illiterate. Michael does not believe in baseless and irrational thoughts. He wants to eradicate such baseless beliefs and customs while the village priest is all for sustaining them. When a young woman dies in childbirth, the priest takes the help of a diviner. On his suggestion, he gets the beautiful hedges torn up near the path and right around the school and a school building is pulled drawn.

Question 2.
Discuss the appropriateness of the title ‘Dead Men’s Path’.
Answer:
The whole story is woven around the path, which, according to the village priest, was used by their dead relatives. It was the path that was there before, the teacher was born and before his father was born. Their dead relatives departed by it and their ancestors visited them by it. It was the path of children yet to be born. So it was the path that was brewing the conflict between the school and the village. The path is the focal point of the story apparently seems to be a suitable title. Moreover, the phrase ‘Dead Men’s Path’ seems to be suggestive of customs and traditions. For customs and traditions are in themselves Dead Men’s Path on which subsequent generations keep on treading. Hence the title ‘Dead Men’s Path’ is very apt.

Question 3.
What do you mean by ‘Superstitions’? Discuss some of the Superstitions described in the story. Do you find such superstitions in your society?
Answer:
Irrational beliefs can be termed as superstitions. In ancient times when people did not know the cause of a particular disease, they ascribed it to some evil spirit or witchcraft. There is a superstition mentioned in the story that dead men use a particular path. It is the path through which their dead ancestors visit them. It is the path of children yet to be born. And that they become angry if it is closed. A young woman died during childbirth but the villagers thought that their ancestors were angry because their path had been closed. Even today we have a number of superstitions in our society. For example, one defers one’s journey if a cat passes across one’s path.

Question 4.
‘Dead men do not require footpaths.’ Explain on the basis of the story.
Answer:
There was an almost disused path across the school-ground. As it connected the village shrine with their place of burial, the villagers believed that their dead relatives departed by that path and visited them by that path. The children that were about to born would come by that path. So the village priest wanted the new headmaster of the school to accept this belief and re-open the path which he had closed. But the headmaster told the village priest that dead men did not require such paths and that it was an absurd idea which he would like their children to laugh at. The headmaster suggested constructing another path, going around their premises. He said that the ancestors would not find the little detour too burdensome.
