4. Answer the following questions in 100 words each:

Question (a)
What feelings does the poem awaken in you ? How do your feelings connect with those of the poet ?
Answer:
The poem ‘If’ by Rudyard Kipling inspires one to inculcate in one’s character the qualities recommended by the poet. Self-control, self confidence, patience, tolerance and courage are all required to tackle the difficult circumstances of life. Truthfulness, being practical in deeds and making the best use of time are essential to achieve success in life. But all these appear to be too indealistic in their totality to be acquired by ordinary persons. Nevertheless, the poet is right in emphasising that they are essential for achievements in life, and above all, making a human being a man in the real sense of the term.

Question (b)
The poem concludes with “You will.be a Man”. What kind of a man is implied here?
Answer:
The poem, “If” concludes with ‘You will be a Man’. The poet implies a kind of a man who is endowed with certain qualities which are not found in ordinary human beings. Self control, self-confidence, patience, truthfulness and love for all are the qualities which when exercised in trying circumstances characterise only the man who is above the ordinary. Similarly equanimity, tolerance, courage in the face of difficulty, remaining active till death, treating all alike and making the fullest use of time are the qualities not usually found in ordinary persons. A man who possesses these qualities in totality is a Man in real sense.

Question (C)
Comment on the mood and tone of the poem.
Answer:
The poem ‘If’ is an address to a son by a father who instructs him to cultivate great virtues so as to be a man in the true sense. Hence, the mood of the poem is inspiring and the tone is didactic. The poem has a universal appeal to all the youths. It inspires them to acquire qualities like self-confidence, self-reliance and self-control. It exhorts them to treat the ups and downs of life with poise. These qualities shall bring them success and perfection in life. Though the poet takes an idealistic view, he teaches the youths the real values of life.

RBSE Class 12 English Prudence Poetry Chapter 8 Additional Questions

Answer the following questions in 50 words each :

Question 1.
Who is the speaker ? What does the poem reveal about the speaker’s character?
Answer:
The poet himself is the speaker. The poem indirectly reveals the virtues of the speaker’s character. It seems that the poet himself is a humble, practical, optimistic, hard working, disciplined and self-confident man as he has appreciated these virtues and inspires his readers to follow them.

Question 2.
“Keep your head” why would this be important ? What does Kipling mean “to trust yourself when others doubt you’?
Answer:
It would be important to “keep our head” (be sensible) because when other people may lose their peace of mind, we should be sensible, otherwise the problem will become more serious. By “to trust yourself when others doubt you” the poet means that when others doubt us, we should not lose our self-confidence. We should trust ourselves without caring for others.

Question 3.
How does one make allowances for doubting ? Why is this important ?
Answer:
One can make allowance for doubting by keeping the balance of mind. The person should not lose his temper. He should have self-confidence. This is important to be successful in life. If one keeps reacting to everybody’s point, one would not be able to concentrate on his aim.

Question 4.
Why does the poet recommend not looking “too good” or “talking too wise”?
Answer:
The poet recommends not looking “too good” or “talking too wise” because people should not be over-confident. People should not try to show what they are not. People should be what they are. They should have self-confidence and strong will power to achieve their aim.

Question 5.
According to the poet, why is it not good to make dreams your master’?
Answer:
According to the poet, it is not good to make ‘dreams our master’. Instead of this, we should make efforts to turn our dreams into reality. We can never achieve success just by dreaming. So we should make our sincere efforts to achieve success, otherwise we will lose everything and will get only disappointment.

Question 6.
Is the poet actually talking about “triumph and disaster” or how a person responds to those situations? What is he conveying here?
Answer:
The poet has used these words symbolically. By triumph and disaster, he means favorable or unfavorable conditions. He means to say that we should accept success and failure equally. We should neither be overjoyed at our success nor feel shattered at our failure.

Question 7.
Why does the poet say “Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it” ?
Answer:
The poet motivates his readers to make the best use of their time. We should keep an account of every second of our life. If we make the fullest and the best use of our time, our success is sure. Therefore the poet says, “Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it”. It means no one can check you from becoming a successful person.

Question 8.
What does unforgiving minute” suggest ?
“Unforgiving minute”
Answer:
“Unforgiving minute” suggests that time lost is lost forever. It does not come back. So we should keep an account of every second of our life. We should make the fullest and the best use of our time. If we waste even a minute of our time, it will not forgive us.

Question 9.
What is the poet’s suggestion regarding ‘being lied about’ and ‘being hated’?
Answer:
Some people may spread rumours about us. They may tell lies about us. They may hate us. But the poet suggests us not to follow the policy of tit for tat. In turn, we should neither tell a lie nor hate others. We should always speak truth and love all.

Question 10.
Explain the phrase – ‘not make thoughts your aim’.
Answer:
The poet here suggests that we should not just keep on thinking and thinking. Thoughts without action are meaningless. We should work to put our thoughts into action and make them a reality. We should be practical. We should plan our future and execute our plans to be successful in life.

Question 11.
what do you understand by ‘wornout tools’ ?
‘Wornout tools’
Answer:
The poet has used these words symbolically. Here ‘wornout tools’ means hard work and determination. The poet inspires us to be courageous and determined. If all our valuable things get broken (things/achievements are lost), we should rebuild (regain) them with the tools of hard work and determination.

RBSE Class 12 English Prudence Poetry Chapter 8 Long Answer Type Question

Answer the following question in about 100 words :

Question 1.
Do you think the virtues preached by the poet are achievable?
Answer:
The poet preaches the virtues of patience, tolerance, truthfulness and love in the poem ‘If’. Though he invokes the youth to inculcate them in their character yet the poem has a universal appeal and applies to all human beings. The poet says that together with these qualities, virtues like equanimity in pain and pleasure, perseverence, humility and hard work may help all to achieve perfection in life and make them men in true sense. But all these are ideals and, if not impossible, are difficult to achieve for ordinary persons. Only the very strong-willed persons gifted with extra-ordinary powers may achieve them.
