Derry suffers from a physical disability. He has an acid burnt face. The people around him whisper about him. They comment that his face is a terrible thing and that none except his mother can ever love him. People often stare at him and make strange comments. His parents show too much love and care for him. They sympathise with him and make him feel helpless. To them, he is a poor guy who will not be able to achieve anything in life. Derry does not at all like people’s attitude towards him. Some show hatred, some show fear and some others show sympathy. Nobody behaves with him like a normal guy and this bothers Derry a lot. He desires normal attention to him. He wishes that people shouldn’t treat him as if he were helpless.

Mr Lamb himself suffers from a physical disability as Derry does. He sees that Derry besides his physical disability suffers from the feeling of loneliness and alienation. He talks to him very lovingly and says that he is free to come to his house whenever he wants. He gives him his own example and tells that children tease him for his tin leg, but he still likes their company. He tells him that people have more interesting things to do than to stare at his face. He provokes him to meet people and do what he wants without bothering what people will say about him. So he locked himself in his room and stayed in his bed. There a picture fell from the wall upon his head and killed him. His life became a motivation for Derry and he overcame his inferiority complex. Now, he got rid of the feeling that people did not like him. He started to love life. He started meeting people and talking to them. He came out of his seclusion. Derry liked the company of Mr Lamb. Despite his mother’s objection, he again came to him. Thus Mr Lamb brought a positive change in Derry’s attitude towards life.

The play ‘On the Face of It’ throws light on the agony of the physically impaired persons. Such a person often finds himself isolated as society refuses to accept him in the mainstream. The play gives the message that due respect should be given to such persons. We should treat them as normal persons and help them keep their self-respect. The physically impaired persons should also not foster inferiority complex. They should think of themselves as normal members of society. They should not thrust loneliness upon themselves. They should develop hobbies and be busy with them. They should make friendship with optimistic people, as Mr Lamb’s short association changed Derry’s life. Derry got inspiration to live a normal life from him. He started talking to people.

As we generally see, physically challenged people are made fun of or kept alienated. This gives birth to inferiority complex in them which is not good either for the person or for the society. One may be physically challenged in a way but we should not deny that the person could be useful to society in some other way. By keeping such people alienated, we deprive our society of their talent. These people should also be bold enough to face the world as it is. They should make the best use of their abilities.
