Question 11.
Why does the narrator term the bargaining as a straight forward matter between dealer and customer?

C. Answer the following questions in about 125 words each:

Question 1.
Justify the title ‘Third Thoughts’.
‘Third Thoughts’
Answer:
The title of the essay ‘Third Thoughts’ is a humorous coinage based on the idiom ‘second thoughts’. ‘Second thoughts’ means opinions or resolutions reached after reconsideration. In this essay, the author goes on reconsidering and changing his opinion directed by his selfish motive. It shows that there is no end to consideration and reconsideration when one’s mind is taken over by selfish thoughts and worldly wisdom. Successive reconsiderations replace lofty and generous ideas with selfish ones. In this lesson, the narrator considers and re-considers his thought of sharing the profit with the dealer. The title suggests that we tend to cheat our own self in the name of second or third thoughts. So it is an extremely apt title to the essay.

Question 2.
Mention the reasons given by the narrator for changing his resolution with each reconsideration.
Answer:
The narrator changed his resolution first time with reconsideration that ‘why put a premium on ineptitude ?’ He says, “It was my eye that detected the probability of the drawing, not his.” The second time he changed his resolution with the reasons – ‘It will only give him the wrong idea of his customers. He will expect similar letters every day and be disappointed’. The third time the reason was that for the first time in his life, he had earned such a big profit. If he gives a part of the profit to the dealer, it is the direct insult of the Goddess of Business. Buying and selling are a perfectly straight forward matter between dealer and customer. The narrator here successfully tries to interpret that we, in fact, deceive ourselves in the name of reconsideration.

Question 3.
“…..the point of narrative resides not in bargaining with the collectors, but in bargaining with my own soul”. How far does the statement embody the true spirit of ‘Third Thoughts’.
Answer:
In this essay the narrator wanted to send half of the profit to the dealer but after reconsidering this issue again and again, he sent him nothing in the end. It shows that there is no end to consideration and reconsideration when one’s mind is taken over by selfish thoughts and worldliness. The lofty ideas soon disappear. Instead of reasoning with others, we reason with our own self and try to convince ourselves that what we are doing is justified as if someone from within ourselves is lurking from behind and telling us that what we are doing is not just and fair. The narrator therefore admits that the point of this narrative lies not in bargaining with collectors but in bargaining with his own soul. In this way this statement embodies the true spirit of ‘Third Thoughts’ to a great extent.

Question 4.
Why are city magnates successful according to the narrator?
Answer:
According to the narrator the city magnets are successful because they don’t do their business based on their emotions. They have deep insight into the business psychology and philosophy of the world of Trade and Commerce. In this world ‘Impulse is negation of the Magnetism.’ Buying and selling are a perfectly straight forward matter between dealer and the customer. The dealer asks as much as he can extort-and the customer having paid it is under no obligation to the dealer. Thus the city magnets are successful because they don’t do foolish impulsive things as the narrator did. In fact they take all the profit with themselves without caring for others out of their sentiments or generosity.

Question 5.
How did the intended note to the dealer read and did it ever reach him?
Answer:
The narrator purchased a drawing for ten shillings. He sold it for fifty pounds. Thus he earned a profit of forty-nine pounds and ten shillings. He wanted to give some amount of profit to the seller of drawing. So he wrote in the intended note to the dealer that the drawing was really drawn by the famous painter Turner, so he was successful in selling it at fifty pounds. The note was to the effect that he had sold the drawing at a big profit which enabled him to make him a present. It was an old and odd belief of the narrator that good luck should be shared. No, the note never reached to the dealer because of the narrator’s consideration and reconsideration about sharing the profit with the dealer. In fact, the narrator began to think selfishly and made many false reasons to share nothing with the dealer.

Question 6.
………… ‘there is no fury like a woman scorned’. Who is the ‘woman’ referred to here and why does the narrator fear her fury?
Answer:
The ‘woman’ referred to here is the Goddess of Business. The narrator fears her fury because he has for the first time in his life brought off a financial coup. By sharing it with the dealer he doesn’t want to insult the Goddess of Business. Just one or two days ago she has blessed him. If he insults her, she may be angry with him and it would probably be the end of him. So he questions himself, “Why should I spoil it by giving a large part of the profit away?” Was not that flying in the face of the Goddess of Business, whoever she may be? Was it not asking her to disregard me-only a day or so after we had, at last, got on terms?” The narrator, in fact, wants to be a successful businessman so he likes to please the Goddess of Business and fear her fury.

B. Answer the following questions in about 125 words each:

Question 1.
How did the dealer behave with the narrator before selling the drawing?
Answer:
The dealer behaved very well with the narrator before selling the drawing. Even though the narrator scornfully asked the dealer how much the drawing cost, the dealer told him very calmly that if it were a genuine Turner it would be worth anything. He made everything clear to the narrator and said that he could buy the drawing for ten shillings and that if he didn’t, he would not mind and take the drawing to London to get an opinion whether it was a genuine Turner. The dealer was not sure whether the drawing was really painted by Turner or not and as such he did not guarantee it. The whole episode shows that the dealer was thoroughly fair in his profession. So he behaved very well with the narrator.

Question 2.
What did the narrator think about the dealer when he was unwilling to send him ten pounds?
Answer:
The narrator had made up his mind to send the dealer ten pounds. But the chain of his thoughts continued. He thought that if he sent the dealer ten pounds, he would form a wrong idea of his customers and that he would expect similar letters every day. But others might not be as fair and sporting as the narrator and so the dealer would become embittered and would weep bitterly. He further thought that it would be a crime to injure such a good-natured man. Ultimately he came to the conclusion that it was absurd to send him ten pounds. The amount would put him above himself and so five pounds would be plenty. In fact, this episode is enough to clarify that the narrator goes on reconsidering and changing his opinion directed by his selfish motive.

Question 3.
Why did the narrator think about the Goddess of Business?
Answer:
The narrator thought that he had some financial gains for the first time in his life. He asked himself why he should spoil it by giving a large part of the profit away. At this point, he thought about the Goddess of Business. He thought that the Goddess of Business would feel insulted if he threw away the profit in such a rash way. Only a few days ago, he had got on terms with her. An insulted woman could be extremely furious. In fact, the narrator did not want to share his big profit with the dealer so he found so many reasons to fulfil his selfish motive. That’s why he thought of the Goddess of Business just to find one more excuse for not sending a part of the profit to the dealer.

Question 4.
“Buying and selling are a perfectly straight forward matter between dealer and customer.”Explain.
Answer:
The narrator bought a drawing for ten shillings and sold it for fifty pounds thus he got a large sum of forty-nine pounds and ten shillings as profit. He impulsively decided to send half of the profit to the dealer as lofty ideas prevailed in the beginning but gradually he began to reason with himself trying to convince himself that it was absurd to send the dealer any money. The views expressed in the given sentence ultimately convince him. He justifies himself saying that such bargains are all part of the business. Buying and selling are a perfectly straight forward matter between dealer and customer. The dealer asks as much as he can extort, and the customer, having paid it, is under no obligation whatever to the dealer. Thinking so he justifies his reason for paying nothing to the dealer.

Question 5.
In the story ‘Third Thoughts’ how does the narrator bargain with his own soul? Explain.
Answer:
The narrator gained a profit of forty-nine pounds and ten shillings. Due to the good behaviour of the dealer, he thought to give him half of the profit. After the third thoughts on it, he bargains with his own soul, ‘Why put a premium on ineptitude?’ Now he says ‘ten pounds’. Again he bargains, ten pounds would put him above himself. Five pounds would be plenty. This time he bargains and asks himself, ‘no, giving a large part of it (profit) would mean the insult of the Goddess of Business. So a douceur of one pound will meet the case. And finally, he quits the idea of one pound too. He bargains and asks his own soul that such bargains are all part of the business. The fact is that the narrator is so clever that he further thinks that it would be a crime to injure such a good-natured man by offering some gift out of his profit.
