Question 1.
Why does the author think that Antarctica is the right place to study the human race’s past, present and future?
OR
Why is Antarctica the place to go to and to understand the earth’s present, past and future?
Answer:
The world’s geological history is trapped in Antarctica. Antarctica belongs to an ancient geological era when things were quite different and when human beings did not exist. Here we can study the earth’s past. About 90 per cent of the earth’s total ice is stored here. There are no trees, buildings or other human marks. Here we see glaciers melting and ice-caps falling. We can see them being damaged as a result of global warming. Antarctica also warns us for the future. It warns the end of the world if the West Antarctica ice sheet melts entirely and the Gulf Stream ocean current is stopped. Thus, Antarctica is the perfect place to go to and to understand the earth’s present, past and the future.

Question 2.
Describe the Antarctic atmosphere as experienced by the author.
Answer:
Antarctica is the coldest, driest and windiest continent in the world. It stores about 90 per centre of the earth’s total volumes. It has no human trace. Here we lose all earthly sense of perspective and time. Here we can see icebergs of different sizes: from midges and mites to blue whales. Days go on and on here. Total silence prevails at this place. This silence is interrupted only by the occasional avalanche or calving ice sheets. It is the only place in the world which has never sustained the human population. It has a very simple ecosystem. It lacks biodiversity. Owing to global warming, its ice is melting. This is posing a great danger to the world. It holds in its ice-cores half million-year-old carbon records trapped in its layers of ice.

Question 3.
“The world’s geological history is trapped in Antarctica.” How is the study of this region useful to us? ‘
Answer:
The study of Antarctica shows that India and Antarctica were parts of a supercontinent named Gondwana. This supercontinent existed 650 million years ago. The climate of Gondwana was much warmer. It fostered a huge variety of flora and fauna. Then about 150 million years ago, dinosaurs were wiped out. The age of mammals started. Gondwana was forced to separate into countries. The globe was shaped much as we know it today. A cold circumpolar current was created. It made Antarctica frigid. It holds half-million-year-old carbon records trapped in its layers of ice. It helps us understand the significance of Cordilleran folds and Pre-Cambrian granite shields, ozone and carbon, evolution and extinction. Thus, we can say that the world’s geological history is really trapped in Antarctica.

Question 1.
How do geological phenomena help us to know about the history of humankind?
Answer:
The study of the geological phenomena brings to our knowledge of how the world must have been millions of years ago. As in Antarctica, Cordilleran folds and Pre-Cambrian granite shields make us know that the climate there was much warmer in the past. That climate hosted a huge variety of flora and fauna. There was no existence of human beings at that time. Fossils buried in the earth give knowledge of huge animals in existence in the past. Their extinction and the coming of mammals on the globe is also hinted by geological phenomena. By studying Antarctica, we can understand the earth’s present, past, and future. It is said that the world’s geological history is hidden under Antarctica. Thus, the geological phenomena help us know about the history of humankind.

Question 2.
What are the indications for the future of humankind?
Answer:
The world today is facing the danger of global warming. Glaciers are melting and ice-caps are falling. These are indications of a much warmer world as existed in the remote past. If that happens, mankind will be wiped out from the global scenario. We shall go the way the dinosaurs, mammoths and woolly rhinos went in the past. The West Antarctic ice sheet will melt entirely. The Gulf Stream ocean current will be disrupted. It seems that climate change will cause the end of the world. Scientists are warning that further damage in the ozone layer will affect the activities of phytoplankton. This will affect the lives of all the marine animals and birds of the Southern Ocean, and the global carbon cycle. Thus, the indications for the future of mankind are really fatal.

Question 3.
What are Geoff Green’s reasons for including high school students in the ‘Students on Ice’ expedition?
Students on Ice
Answer:
Geoff Green’s Students on Ice’expedition aimed at studying Antarctica from a geological point of view. It also aimed at developing a new understanding and respect for the earth. Achieving these aims would be of use only if we put them to practice. So Geoff Green included high school students in his expedition. He provided them with inspiring educational opportunities. At this age, the students are ready to absorb, learn and act. The knowledge of the geological history of the earth can give them deep insight. Based on that insight, they can find ways to save the earth from the threat of ruining its ecology. In future, they can make policies based on their knowledge. Today’s children are the shapers of the future. Hence they need to understand the earth’s present, past, and future.

Question 4.
‘Take care of the small things and the big things will take care of themselves’. What is the relevance of this statement in the context of the Antarctic environment?
Answer:
Antarctica has quite a simple ecosystem. It lacks biodiversity. It is the perfect place to study how small changes in the environment can have bad effects in the long run. Here we find a very small seagrass named phytoplankton. These grasses sustain the entire Southern Ocean’s food chain. Further damage to the ozone layer will affect the activities of phytoplankton. This will affect the lives of all marine animals and birds of the region and the global carbon cycle. This example shows that we have to take care of every small thing to save our world from destruction. We must also prevent the depletion of the ozone layer by reducing carbon dioxide emission.

Question 5.
What was ‘Students on Ice?
‘Students on Ice’
Answer:
‘Students on Ice’ was a programme that aimed at taking high school students to the end of the world. This programme was headed by a Canadian, Geoff Green. It aimed at providing the students with inspiring educational opportunities. This would help them foster a new understanding and respect for the earth. It offered the students a life-changing experience at an age when they were ready to absorb, learn and act accordingly. The programme became successful by making the students aware of the dangers of global warming. It gave them knowledge of Antarctica’s past and thus made them feel that human beings will have to be considerate towards their ecology. In the writer’s opinion, Antarctica is the perfect place to understand the earth’s present, past, and future.

Question 6.
How was the author’s Antarctica experience?
Ans. On reaching Antarctica, the author saw its expansive white landscape and widespread blue
horizon. She felt great relief at seeing it. Then immediately came the feeling of deep wonder at its hugeness and its isolation. The author was also surprised to know that there was a time when India and Antarctica were part of the same landmass. Antarctica is devoid of any human markers. This made her lose all earthly sense of perspective and time. She felt like walking into a giant ping pong ball. Her most thrilling experience was of walking on the ocean on a gangplank. It is the place where 90% of the Earth’s total ice volumes are stored. To visit Antarctica is to get a grasp of where we have come from and where we could possibly be heading.

Question 7.
In what way have humans affected global phenomenon?
Answer:
Human beings have always tried to establish their dominance over nature. Natural resources are limited and the human population is growing rapidly. This has left us battling with other species. Thoughtless burning of fossil fuels has created a blanket of carbon dioxide gas around the world. The ozone layer is depleting. It is increasing the average global temperature. Melting ice will increase the water level of the seas and oceans. Due to this, many countries will be submerged under water. Global warming is posing a great danger to the future of the Earth. Thus, humans, in the name of development, have brought the world at the edge of destruction. Their development is costing very high to Mother Nature.

Question 3.
As a reporter, you visited Antarctica to observe environmental changes. Write a newspaper report on the same.
Answer:
Ajmer, 2 April 20–
Last week, I visited Antarctica with a group of scientists. I joined the group with the purpose of observing environmental changes. Thinking that presently this ice-covered area was once much warmer and hosted a huge variety of flora and fauna makes us aware of environmental changes. Antarctica is a crucial element in the debate over climate change. Here we can clearly see glaciers retreating and ice shelves collapsing. This makes us realise that the threat of global warming is very real. Antarctica, because of her simple ecosystem and lack of biodiversity is the perfect place to study how little changes in the environment can have big effects.
