हिन्दी में Adverb को क्रिया विशेषण कहते हैं परन्तु Adverb तथा क्रिया विशेषण में अन्तर है। हिन्दी में क्रिया विशेषण उन शब्दों को कहते हैं जो केवल क्रिया की विशेषता बताते हैं जबकि अंग्रेजी में Adverb उसे कहते हैं। जो verb के अतिरिक्त Adjective तथा अन्य Adverb की भी विशेषता बताते हैं। निम्नलिखित उदाहरण को ध्यानपूर्वक देखिये
(i) He ran fast.
यहाँ पर fast, verb ‘ran’ की विशेषता बताता है।
(ii) He ran very fast.
यहाँ पर ‘very’ adverb ‘fast’ की भी विशेषता बताता है।
(iii) It is quite useless.
यहाँ पर ‘quite’ adjective useless’ की विशेषता बता रहा है। इस प्रकार से fast, very तथा quite तीनों ही adverb कहलाते हैं।

परिभाषा-Adverb वह शब्द होता है जो Noun, Pronoun तथा Interjection को छोड़कर अन्य किसी भी Part of Speech की विशेषता प्रकट करता है। Adverb of Time ये वे adverb होते हैं जो समय बताते हैं। जैसे
(i) He came late.
(ii) I have seen this book before.
(iii) Call him early.
(iv) She came here yesterday.

पहचान-इन्हें वाक्य की क्रिया में when ? से प्रश्न पूछने पर ज्ञात किया जा सकता है।
नोट-वाक्य में समय प्रकट करने के लिए सामान्यतया निम्नलिखित शब्द प्रयुक्त होते हैं। now, late, daily, before, then, already since, today, early, afterwards, yesterday, tomorrow, ago, Soon इत्यादि। Adverb of Place ये वे adverb होते हैं जो स्थान बताते हैं। जैसे|
(i) He goes there.
(ii) Ram comes here.
(iii) Come in.
(iv) Get out.

पहचान-इन्हें क्रिया में where? लगाकर ज्ञात किये जाते हैं। नोट-वाक्य में समय प्रकट करने के लिए ये शब्द प्रयुक्त होते हैं : there, here, above, out, near, below, far, within, hither, thither, inward, behind, away, everywhere, in, backward etc.
