परिभाषा – Noun का वह रूप जिससे उसके एक या एक से अधिक होने का बोध हो, Number (वचन) कहलाता है। वचन दो होते हैं
(1) Singular Number (एकवचन)
(2) Plural Number (बहुवचन)

1. Singular Number – एकवचन से केवल एक व्यक्ति, वस्तु या स्थान की बोध होता है । जैसे – Boy, horse, chair, hand आदि ।
2. PluralNumber- बहुवचन से एक से अधिक व्यक्तियों या वस्तुओं का बोध होता है। जैसे – Boys, horses, chairs, hands आदि । एकवचन की संज्ञाओं से बहुवचन की संज्ञाएँ बनाने के निम्नलिखित नियम हैं

नियम 1. साधारणतया एकवचन से बहुवचन बनाते समय संज्ञाओं के अन्त में s जोड़ देते हैं । जैसे

नियम 2. जिन Nouns के अन्त में s, ss, ch, sh, z, x आये, उनका बहुवचन अधिकतर es लगाने से बनता है। जैसे

नियम 3. यदि शब्दों के अन्त में ‘y’ हो और उससे पहले कोई vowel (स्वर) हो तो Plural बनाते समय ‘s’ लगाते हैं । जैसे

नियम 4. यदि शब्द के अन्त में ‘y’ हो और उससे पहले कोई consonant (व्यंजन) हो तो बहुवचन बनाते समय y को ” में बदलकर ‘es’ लगाते हैं। जैसे

नियम 5. निम्नलिखित 12 Nouns को बहुवचन बनाने के लिए fया fe को हटाकर ves लगाते हैं
calf, half, knife, leaf, life, loaf, self, sheaf, shelf, thief, wife, wolf. जैसे

नोट- शेष शब्दों के अन्त में ‘f’ या ‘fe’ होते हुए भी केवल ‘s’ लगाते हैं। जैसे

नियम 6. जिन शब्दों के अन्त में ‘o’ हो तो Plural बनाते समय ‘es’ लगाते हैं। जैसे

परन्तु – संक्षिप्त शब्दों व विदेशी उत्पत्ति वाले शब्दों के अन्त में o होने पर केवल s लगेगा । जैसे

नियम 7. कुछ शब्दों का Plural (बहुवचन) Vowels (a, e, i, 0, u) के बदलने से बनता है। जैसे

नियम 8. कुछ शब्दों का Plural ‘en’ या ‘ren’ जोड़ने से बनता है। जैसे

नियम 9. संयुक्त संज्ञाओं (Compound Nouns) का बहुवचन सामान्यतया अंतिम शब्द के बहुवचन बनाने से बनता है । जैसे
step – Son
step – sons
boy – friend
boy – friends
परन्तु यदि man तथा woman शब्द जुड़ा हो तो दोनों को ही बहुवचन बनाया जाता है । जैसे

noun+preposition + noun की स्थिति में पहले शब्द को ही बहुवचन बनाया जाता है । जैसे

नियम 10. कुछ Nouns का रूप एकवचने तथा बहुवचन में एक-सा रहता है । जैसे

नियम 11.Pronouns (सर्वनाम) के एकवचन तथा बहुवचन निम्न प्रकार से होते हैं:
