One day a woodcutter was cutting woods from a tree. The tree stood on the bank of a river. By chance his axe slipped off his hands and fell into the river. Hearing his wailing, the god of the river appeared before him with a gold-axe and asked the woodcutter, “Is this your axe ?” The woodcutter shook his head in negative and said, “No sir, this is not my axe.” The god of the river dived into the river. The god came out with a silver axe and asked “Is this your axe ?” The woodcutter again refused. The god of the river dived again and came out with gold, silver and iron axe. Seeing the iron axe, the woodcutter spread out his hand and said, “Yes, sir, this iron axe is mine.”

The god of the river was very much pleased. Seeing his hone ty, he gave him all the axes of gold, silver and iron.

The king announced, “People of this great kingdom, I welcome you all. I want to select a talented and good individual to ascend the throne after me. For this reason I am holding a small competition. I will hand out plant seeds to each person. The seeds are to be planted and maintained well for three months. Whoever brings back the best grown plant with colourful flowers will be chosen as the crown prince. A person who can take care of the plants and make them grow, can also make the kingdom prosper.”

“My dear people! This man Vikram who has not grown any plant will be my successor.” The people were disappointed. The ministers and the judges were shocked. The king continued, “I was looking for a man with a strong character and I have found him. I had all the seeds roasted before I gave them out. This fact was kept a secret. I was on the look out for an honest person. When I saw the pot without any plant, I knew that I’ve found the honest man.” The people were surprised. The ministers and the judges appreciated the king for his wise decision. King Mahender declared Vikram the prince of Mahapal.

हिन्दी अनुवाद – मन्त्री ने राजा से कहा,“महाराज! हमारे निर्णायक सही व्यक्ति को चुनने में असमर्थ हैं। एक आदमी ऐसा भी है जो कोई भी पौधा नहीं उगा सका। उसके गमले में  केवल मिट्टी ही है। क्या मैं उसे वापिस भेज दें।” राजा ने आदेश दिया, “मुझे वह गमला दिखाओ जिस में कोई पौधा नहीं है।” “जी स्वामी”, मन्त्री ने कहा । मन्त्री वह गमला लाया। राजा ने उस पर नाम की पर्ची लगी देखी और उस आदमी को बुलवाया। भीड़ में से कोई व्यक्ति चीखा, “गमले को देखो, एक छोटा-सा पौधा भी नहीं है। इसके लिये उसे कठोर दण्ड मिलेगा।” भय से काँपता हुआ गमले का स्वामी विक्रम, राजा के पास आया। राजा ने पूछा, “गमले में कोई पौधा क्यों नहीं है?” भय से काँपते हुए और हाथ जोड़कर विक्रम ने कहा “हे महामहिम ! मेरे स्वामी, मैंने अधिक खाद डालकर और सावधानी से बीजों को पानी देकर भरसक प्रयास किया। मुझे खेद है यह कहने में कि मैं एक भी पौधा नहीं उगा सका।” यह सुनकर राजा बहुत खुश हुआ और वह खड़ा हो गया और प्रजा को सम्बोधित किया,”हे मेरी प्रिय प्रजा! यह आदमी विक्रम जिसने पौधा नहीं उगाया है, यही मेरा उत्तराधिकारी बनेगी।”
