Missing Letter में किसी शब्द में छूटे हुए अक्षरों की पूर्ति कराई जाती है उसके सम्बन्ध में कुछ नियमों का वर्णन यहाँ – किया जा रहा है

नियम (1)
जब किसी शब्द में full जोड़ा जाता है तो अन्तिम को छोड़ दिया जाता है जैसे
wonder + full = wonderful
faith + full =  faithful

नियम (2)
जिन शब्दों के अन्त में होते हैं और यदि उनमें कुछ जोड़ा जाये तो एक कम हो जाता है जैसे –
well + come = welcome

नियम (3)
यदि किसी शब्द के अन्त में y हो तो – full जोड़ते समय y का हो जाता है। जैसे –
beauty + full = beautiful

नियम (4)
यदि शब्द के अन्त में हो और उससे पहले एक vowel हो तो उस को दो बार लिख दिया जाता है जब उसके बाद पुन: कोई vowel आये जैसे –
quarrel + ed = quarrelled

नियम (5)
जबVerb के अन्त में ‘e’ आता है तो – ing’ लगाते समय ‘e’ को हटा दिया जाता है जैसे –
come + ing = coming
write + ing = writing

नियम (6)
जिन Verbs में अन्तिम अक्षर से पहले केवल एक vowel (a, e,i, 0 या u) हो तो – ing लगाते समय अन्तिम अक्षर double हो जाता है जैसे –
run + ing = running
sit + ing = sitting

नोट – किन्तु h, q, u, w, y तथा x पर समाप्त होने वाले शब्दों के साथ -ing जोड़ने पर अन्तिम अक्षर double नहीं होता है जैसे –
grow + ing = growing
lay + ing = laying
box + ing = boxing

नियम (7)
जिन शब्दों के अन्त में y या ll हो तो -ing लगाते समय y या l को नहीं हटाते हैं जैसे –
play + ing = playing
cry + ing = crying
call + ing = calling

नियम (8)
यदि अन्तिम अक्षर से पहले दो vowels हों तो ing लगाते समय अन्तिम अक्षर double नहीं होता है जैसे
read + ing = reading
rain + ing = raining
eat + ing = eating

नियम (9)
ऐसे Verbs जिनके अन्त में ie आते हैं, उनमें – ing जोड़ने पर ie के स्थान पर y कर देते हैं। जैसे –
lie + ing = lying
die + ing = dying

नियम (10)
एक syllable वाले शब्द के अंत में कभी भी अकेले -s, -f, -c,-l, -z नहीं आयेंगे, यदि इनके पूर्व एक ही vowel हो तो जैसे – miss, buzz, kiss, fill, staff.

नियम (11)
यदि एक syllable वाले शब्द में केवल एक ही vowel हो तो इसके अंत में कभी भी अकेला नहीं आयेगा इसके स्थान पर – ck का प्रयोग होगा luck, stick, lick, lack. परीक्षा में Spelling से सम्बन्धित प्रश्न में वाक्य में दिये। गये शब्दों में से एक शब्द के कुछ अक्षर (letters) छूटे हुए (missing) होते हैं जैसे –
प्रश्न – You are my br_th_r. यहाँ br_th_r में कुछ अक्षर छूट गये हैं इसकी सही spelling होगी – brother अतः स्पष्ट है कि रिक्त स्थान में विद्यार्थी को br के बाद और th के बाद e लिखना होगा इस प्रकार प्रश्न का उत्तर होगा – You are my brother.
