Diwali is a very important festival of the Hindus. It takes place in the month of Kartik. The word Diwali means ‘row of lamps’. On this day Shri Ram Chandra returned to Ayodhya after exile of fourteen years. People clean and whitewash their houses and shops. They decorate them with pictures and toys. People buy sweets and toys. They put on new clothes. Children eat sweets. In the night people light lamps, candles and bulbs. They worship goddess Lakshmi. They send sweets to their friends and relatives. They go to see the light in markets.

At 4 p.m. both teams entered the field. At 4:30 the referee blew his whistle. Now the match began. Both of the teams were playing well. For some time none of them could score a goal. Our captain was a good player. He hit the ball and it went into the goal post. Rival team could not score a single goal till the end. The game was over. Our team won the match.

Mahatma Gandhi (महात्मा गाँधी)
Mahatma Gandhi was a great leader. He is called the Father of the Nation. He was born on October 2, 1869 at Porbandar in Gujarat. His father was a Diwan. His mother was a religious lady. He was sent to school at the age of seven. He passed the High School exam at the age of seventeen. Then he went to England to study law. He went to South Africa for practice. Then he joined the National Congress. He led the freedom movement. He was sent to prison many times. India became free in 1947. On January 30, 1948 he was shot dead by Nathuram Godse.
हिन्दी अनुवाद – महात्मा गाँधी एक महान नेता थे । वह राष्ट्रपिता कहलाते हैं । उनको जन्म 2 अक्टूबर, 1869 को गुजरात में पोरबन्दर में हुआ था। उनके पिता दीवान थे। उनकी माता एक धार्मिक महिला थीं । सात वर्ष की उम्र में उन्हें स्कूल भेजा गया। उन्होंने 17 वर्ष की आयु में हाईस्कूल परीक्षा उत्तीर्ण की । तब वह कानून पढ़ने के लिए इंग्लैण्ड गये। वह वकालात के अभ्यास के लिए दक्षिण अफ्रीका गये। तत्पश्चात् वह राष्ट्रीय कांग्रेस में सम्मिलित हो गये । उन्होंने स्वाधीनता आन्दोलन का नेतृत्व किया। उन्हें बहुत बार जेल भेजा गया। 1947 में भारत स्वतन्त्र हो गया। 30 जनवरी, 1948 को उन्हें नाथूराम गोडसे के द्वारा गोली मार दी गई।

Last year I went to Jaipur with my father. My father took me to the zoo. The entry was by tickets. We bought our tickets and entered through the gate. Different kinds of birds were twittering there. There were many strange birds. There were swans, cranes and ducks. We saw tortoises, crocodiles and fish. The lions, tigers, bears and panthers were in cages. There were zebras, stags and deer. We also saw elephants, camels, horses and donkeys. Owls, foxes, cuckoos and hawks were also there. I liked the zoo very much.
हिन्दी अनुवाद – पिछले वर्ष मैं अपने पिताजी के साथ जयपुर गया । मेरे पिताजी मुझे चिड़ियाघर ले गये । प्रवेश टिकटों से था । हमने अपनी टिकटें खरीदी और दरवाजे में से प्रवेश किया। वहाँ विभिन्न प्रकार की चिड़ियाँ चहचहा रही र्थी । वहाँ कई अनोखी चिड़ियाँ थीं । वहाँ हंस, सारस और बतखें थीं । हमने कछुआ, मगर और मछलियाँ देखीं। शेर, चीते, रीछ और तेंदुए पिजरों में थे । वहाँ जेबरा, बारहसिंगा और हिरन थे । हमने हाथी, ऊँट, घोड़े तथा गधे देखे उल्लू, लोमड़ियाँ, कोयल तथा बाज भी वहाँ थे । मुझे चिड़ियाघर बहुत अच्छा लगा ।।

A Village Fair (गाँव का मेला)
A village fair is often a small fair held on a particular occasion. It is held in an open space. People from adjoining villages gather there. Generally there is a river. They bathe in the river and worship some gods or goddesses. Men, women and children from villages gather there. Temporary shops are there. Villagers buy things useful to them. A number of shops of sweets are there. Such a fair is useful from many points of view. In a country like ours it is very useful.
हिन्दी अनुवाद – गाँव का मेला अक्सर एक छोटा मेला होता है जो किसी विशेष अवसर पर लगता है । यह एक खुले मैदान में लगता है । अगल-बगल के गाँवों से लोग इस मेले में आते हैं। सामान्यतः वहाँ कोई नदी होती है । लोग नदी में स्नान करते हैं और कुछ देवी-देवताओं की पूजा करते हैं। ग्रामीण पुरुष, महिलाएँ तथा बच्चे इस मेले में आते हैं। अस्थायी दुकानें लगायी जाती हैं । ग्रामवासी अपनी

A Rainy Day (बरसात का एक दिन)
It was the day of August 10. It had been raining since morning. It rained so heavily that it was not possible to go out even with an umbrella. Father did not go to office. At about ten, the rain stopped for a while. I started for school. But soon, it began to rain again. Anyhow I reached school. Only a few students turned up. They met the headmaster and requested him to declare the day as a rainy day. School was closed. I returned home happily. There was water everywhere. I was glad to have a holiday.
हिन्दी अनुवाद – यह 10 अगस्त का दिन था। सुबह से ही वर्षा हो रही थी। इतने जोर से वर्षा हो रही थी कि छाता लेकर भी बाहर निकलना सम्भव नहीं था पिताजी कार्यालय नहीं गये । दस बजे के लगभग वर्षा थोड़ी देर के लिए रुकी। मैं स्कूल के लिए रवाना हुआ। पर थोड़ी देर के बाद । ही वर्षा फिर शुरू हो गयी किसी तरह मैं स्कूल पहुँचा ।
बहुत थोड़े विद्यार्थी आये थे उन्होंने प्रधानाध्यापक से भेंट की और उनसे अनुरोध किया कि उस दिन को बारिश का दिन घोषित कर दें। स्कूल बन्द हो गया मैं आनन्दित होकर घर लौटा । हर जगह पानी ही पानी था छुट्टी हो जाने के कारण मैं प्रसन्न था ।
