What is land use?
Answer:
The different types of activities for which an area of land is used is called its land uses. Generally, all geographically available land is classified on the -basis of land uses into-Forest land, agricultural land, barren land, non-cultivable land, grassland/pasture lands, garden land, current fallow lands, old fallow land, and land used for other purposes.

Land uses are classified into many categories like-

Forest land is that area of land where natural vegetation is found. Garden land is where fruit bearing trees are grown. Agriculture land is one where different types of crops are grown. Non cultivable land can also be used for agriculture through some efforts but due to – some inconvenience they are left unused.

Fallow lands are of two types : current fallow and old fallow lands both are used for agriculture purpose however due to some reasons and objectives the land is left unused currently. Barren land is unsuitable for agriculture, but due to local demands they are left for grasslands. Land used for other purposes include residential lands, transport, canal, shops, industries etc, which can be used for other land purposes as well.

Answer:
There is a vast difference in land use in villages and cities. The land cost in cities is
more compared to that in villages. Land in villages is mostly used for agriculture, grazing land and for ponds. On the other hand, land in cities is used for residences, offices, industries, transport and gardens etc.

Why land conservation is necessary in present times? What ill-effects we observe due to not conserving land?
Answer:
Due to land degradation, the quality, productivity and usefulness of land has reduced. Land conservation is highly important to maintain the quality of land. All creatures are associalted to land and they meet all their needs from land. Even human beings are associated with land all their life, therefore it is important to conserve it.

The food for increasing population, cattle feed for animals, raw material for agriculture-based industries, etc, all are dependent on the quality of land. Hence land conservation is essential. Problems we will face if land is not conserved : By not conserving land the following problems may arise :

  • The quality of land will completely deteriorate.
  • There will be reduction in productivity and usefulness of land.
  • There will be food shortage for the increasing population.
  • Problems of inavailability of sufficient quantity of cattle feed may arise.
  • Forest land may reduce which will have adverse impact on our environment.
  • The animals and creatures which live on land will be adversely affected due to polluted land.
  • The agriculture-based industries will also suffer as they are dependent on land for their raw material.

Write the use of public land in your area and briefty explain.
Answer:
On the basis of ownership, land can be divided into personal and public. Public land is one which is owned by the whole community. Parks, playgrounds, grazing lands, forest, water area, etc., are public lands on which everyone has equal right. Herding in pasture lands, wood for fuel, flowers and fruits, and wood for construction is provided from forest. The public lands are very important for landless people.

Sustainable Agriculture is practised in our region, its main objective is to grow sufficient foodgrains for the upbringing of the family. Answer:
In India during the year 1950-51 the percentage of agricultue land to total land was 67% which reduced to 60% in 1970-71 and 1990-91 and further reduced to 59% in 2008-09. The forest lands have increased. The percentage of forest land to total land was 13% in the year 1970-71 which increased gradually in 1990-91 and became 22% in the year 2008-09.

The barren land was 13% of the total land in the year 1950-51 which reduced to 5% in the year. The area of pasture land has gradually increased. In the vear 1950-51 pasture land was 2% of the total area which increased to 3% in 2008-09. The percentage of land for other purposes to total land was approximately 2.5% in 1950-51 which gradually increased approximately to 8% in the year 2008-09. The above figures reflect the changes in land uses in the past 60 years in India.

Government has a traditional approach focused on the development of backward people and for providing better amenities to them, which has resulted in decrease in agriculture land. Due to increase in population in urban cities, land used for other purposes has increased and also pasture land and forest land have increased.
