RBSE Class 9 English Gems of Fiction Chapter 3 The King and the Drum Long Answer Type Questions

Answer the following questions in about 60-80 words each :

Question 1.
Why did the king run out of the palace?
Answer:
Following the order of the king, the courtiers assembled outside the king’s door. The musician began to play the drum made of the Tamarind stem. But instead of the thum-thum-thum, the Tamarind drum said, “The Raja has horns on his head, ……” The court burst out laughing. The king cried with rage, “I won’t stay in the palace a moment longer.” He ran out of the palace, seizing the Tamarind drum. He went to the forest.

Question 2.
The title “The King and the Drum’ is quite apt. Justify.
Answer:
The title of the lesson is quite appropriate. The entire story revolves round the king and the Tamarind drum. The story begins with a boastful king. The story reaches its climax when the drum made of Tamarind wood reveals the king’s secret to all. It is the moment when his false pride shatters before his courtiors. Ultimately he realises his weaknesses and becomes a good human being with the help of the drum.
