Freedom Struggle of India
India was ruled by the English. Initially people had fear of the English. But there were many patriots of extraordinary courage. They wanted to hold our motherland’s head high. But it was very tough work for them because our country was divided into fragments and narrow domestic walls. Such courageous people encouraged the people of India. The innocent but determined people of our country came forward for the noble cause. The depth of truth did not let them wander into the dreary desert of dead habit. A day came when our country won independence. The prayer of the poet was heard by the Father of the Universe. Our country awoke into that heaven of freedom.

भारत पर अंग्रेजों का शासन था। शुरुआत में तो भारतीय अंग्रेजों से भयभीत थे। लेकिन कई सारे अदम्य साहस वाले देशभक्त थे। वे अपनी मातृभूमि का सिर गर्व से ऊँचा करना चाहते थे। लेकिन यह उनके लिए बहुत ही कठिन कार्य था क्योंकि हमारा देश संकुचित घरेलू झगड़ों से छोटे-छोटे टुकड़ों में बँटा हुआ था। ऐसे साहसी लोगों ने भारत के लोगों को साहस दिलाया। हमारे देश के भोले भाले लेकिन जिद्दी लोग इस नेक काम के लिए आगे आये। सत्य की गहराई ने उन्हें प्राचीन रूढ़ियों के नीरस मरुस्थल में नहीं खोने दिया। एक दिन ऐसा आया जब हमारा देश स्वतंत्र हुआ। कवि की प्रार्थना को परमपिता के द्वारा सुन लिया गया। हमारा देश उस स्वतंत्रता के स्वर्ग में जागा।

Why does the poet stress on ‘reason’ as one of the qualities of free India?
कवि स्वतंत्र भारत की अच्छाइयों (विषेशताओं) में से एक ‘तर्क’ पर जोर क्यों देता है?

The poet wishes that when India gets freedom, its people should be reasonable (rational). People should accept new ideas and give up old ideas (useless habits) on the basis of reason. If they continue following dead habits blindly, they will not be free truely. So he stresses on reason’.

By ‘where knowledge is free’ the poet means availability of knowledge without any check on it. He wishes that in free India knowledge should be the right of every person. People should be free to gain knowledge without any restriction.
