This story is about an eccentric scientist who has made himself invisible by swallowing a rare drug. Now he is a homeless wanderer. His name is Griffin. His landlord did not like him. So Griffin set his house on fire. But it was a cold-weather of London so he could not live without clothes. So he slipped inside a big London store for warmth. In the store, he enjoyed food and new clothes. The next morning, the store assistants chased him but he took off his clothes and became invisible. After this, he entered a theatrical company and dressed him up and robbed the shopkeeper. Then he went to Iping to spend a peaceful time. He spent all money and was penniless. He stole the housekeeping money of a clergyman.
Mr. and Mrs. Hall, the owner of the inn, visited his room and suddenly the furniture became alive. It threw them out of the room. Now everybody suspected Griffin. When Mrs. Hall asked him about it, he grew angry and turned off his bandages. He became headless. All were frightened there. The village constable was sent for. He tried to catch him but Griffin knocked him unconsciously and became invisible again.

Mystery behind imprints: The mystery behind these imprints was very clear. These footprints were of a scientist whose name was Griffin. Recently he had discovered a rare drug to make the human body invisible.
Griffin A brilliant but eccentric scientist: Griffin was a brilliant scientist who had discovered a rare drug but he was an eccentric and lawless person. He misused his power. He set fire to his landlord’s house because his landlord did not like him and wanted to eject him. Thus he became a homeless wanderer and only two boys could see him.
Entered a big London store: It was a midwinter season. So Griffin could not live without clothes and entered a big London store. After closing it up, he wore warm clothes, ate food, coffee, sweet and wine. At last he slept on a pile of quilts.
Again without clothes: The next morning, Griffin did not wake up in time and the store assistants saw him. They chased him to catch but Griffin put off his clothes and escaped easily from there. Now once again he had become clothes. He went straight to Drury Lane, the centre of the theatre world, in the hope of finding clothes.
Attacked the shopkeeper and robbed the money: He entered a theatrical shop and fitted himself with bandages round his forehead, with dark glasses, false nose and big bushy side-whiskers. He attacked the shopkeeper and robbed him of all his money. Quickly he ran towards Iping village from there. Now he was visible.
The inn in Iping: He booked two rooms in the inn. Mrs Hall was the landlord’s wife. She tried to be friendly with him but he forbade her to disturb him. For his uncommon appearance, he made an excuse that an accident had affected his face. His arrival in winter was very surprising to all.
His money finished and he stole clergyman’s money: After some time, his stolen money finished and he had to steal clergyman’s housekeeping money. Mr. and Mrs. Hall woke-up and got very surprised to Griffin’s door wide open. They entered the room. Suddenly the room chair became alive and pushed them out of the room.
Griffin was suspected as a thief: Mrs. Hall strongly suspected Griffin as a thief. The village constable was called in secretly. But Mrs. Hall could not wait for the constable and asked Griffin about the chair. She asked him how he had entered a locked room.
The furious Griffin: At this Griffin became angry and shouted loudly. He threw off his bandages, spectacles and nose. Now he had become a headless man. The people were horrified to see a headless man.
Encounter with Jaffers-The constable: Mr. Jaffers, the constable came there. He was surprised to see a headless man. But he did his duty and tried to arrest him. Griffin started to take off his clothes one by one and became completely invisible. He blew down Jaffers and made him unconscious. Thus once again Griffin made himself free.

सिपाही-जैफर्स के साथ मुठभेड़ः सिपाही श्रीमान जैफर्स, वहाँ आ गया। वह बिना सिर वाले आदमी को देखकर बहुत आश्चर्यचकित हुआ। लेकिन उसने अपना कर्तव्य निभाया और उसे गिरफ्तार करने का प्रयास किया। ग्रिफिन ने एक-एक करके अपने सारे कपड़े उतारने शुरू कर दिए और पूर्ण रूप से अदृश्य हो गया। उसने जैफर्स को मुक्के से मारकर बेहोश कर दिया। इस प्रकार ग्रिफिन ने एक बार फिर स्वयं को मुक्त कर लिया।

When he produced some ready cash, Mrs. Hall’s suspicion grew stronger.

Mrs. Hall could not wait and she started asking him questions. The scientist lost his temper and threw off the bandages and spectacles and became a headless man once again.

Further footprints followed one after another, descending the steps and progressing down the street.
The boys followed, fascinated, until the muddy impressions became fainter and fainter, and at last disappeared altogether.

He escaped easily enough from the boys who followed his footprints in London.
But his adventures were by no means over.
He had chosen a bad time of the year to wander about London without clothes.
It was mid-winter The air was bitterly cold and he could not do without clothes.
Instead of walking about the streets he decided to slip into a big London store for warmth.

Closing time arrived, and as soon as the doors were shut Griffin was able to give himself the pleasure of clothing and feeding himself without regard to expense.
He broke open boxes and wrappers and fitted himself out with warm clothes.
Soon, with shoes, an overcoat, and a wide-brimmed hat, he became a fully dressed and visible person.
In the kitchen of the restaurant he found cold meat and coffee, and he followed up the meal with sweets and wine taken from the grocery store. Finally he settled down to sleep on a pile of quilts.

If only Griffin had managed to wake up in good time all might have been well.
As it was, he did not wake up until the assistants were already arriving next morning.
When he saw a couple of them approaching, he panicked and began to run.
They naturally gave chase.
In the end he was able to escape only by quickly taking off his newly found clothes.
So once more he found himself invisible but naked in the chill January air.

Shivering with cold he hurried to Drury Lane, the centre of the theatre world.

To escape without being seen, he callously attacked the shopkeeper from behind, after which he robbed him of all the money he could find.

Satisfied that her guest was an eccentric scientist and in view of the fact that he had paid her in advance, Mrs Hall was prepared to excuse his strange habits and irritable temper.
But the stolen money did not last long and presently Griffin had to admit that he had no more ready cash.
He pretended, however, that he was expecting a cheque to arrive at any moment.
इस बात से संतुष्ट होकर कि उसका मेहमान एक सनकी वैज्ञानिक था और इस तथ्य को ध्यान में रखकर कि उसने पेशगी किराया दे दिया था, श्रीमती हॉल उसकी अजीब आदतों और चिड़चिड़े स्वभाव की उपेक्षा करने को तैयार थी।

Shortly afterwards a curious episode occurred.
Very early in the morning a clergyman and his wife were awakened by noises in the study.
Creeping downstairs, they heard the chink of money being taken from the clergyman’s desk.
Without making any noise and with a poker grasped firmly in his hand, the clergyman flung open the door.
“Surrender!”
इसके शीघ्र बाद एक अनोखी घटना घटी।
बहुत सुबह ही एक पादरी और उसकी पत्नी अध्ययन कक्ष में शोर सुनकर जाग गए।
सीढ़ियों से नीचे उतरते समय उन्होंने पादरी की मेज से पैसे लिए जाने की आवाज सुनी।
बिना कोई आवाज किए और हाथ में मजबूती से एक पोकर लिए पादरी ने जोर से दरवाजा खोला।
“आत्मसमर्पण!”

Then to his amazement, he realized that the room appeared to be empty.
He and his wife looked under the desk and behind the curtains and even up the chimney.
There wasn’t a sign of anybody.
Yet the desk had been opened and the housekeeping money was missing.
“Extraordinary affair!” the clergyman kept saying for the rest of the day.
But it was not as extraordinary as the behaviour of Mrs Hall’s furniture a little later that morning.
वह तब आश्चर्यचकित रह गया जब उसने अनुभव किया कि कमरा खाली दिखाई दे रहा है।
उसने और उसकी पत्नी ने डेस्क के नीचे देखा, परदों के पीछे और यहाँ तक कि चिमनी में भी देखा।
वहाँ किसी के होने का कोई चिह्न नहीं मिला।

किंतु यह उतना असामान्य नहीं था जितना कि उस सुबह इसके कुछ समय बाद श्रीमती हॉल के फर्नीचर का व्यवहार रहा।
Passage-16: (Pages 22 & 23)
The landlord and his wife were up very early, and were surprised to see the scientist’s door wide open.
Usually it was shut and locked, and he was furious if anyone entered his room.
The opportunity seemed too good to be missed.
They peeped round the door, saw nobody, and decided to investigate.
The bedclothes were cold, showing that the scientist must have been up for some time; and stranger still, the clothes and bandages that he always wore were lying about the room.
मकान मालिक और उसकी पत्नी सुबह जल्दी उठ गए थे। और उन्हें यह देखकर आश्चर्य हुआ कि वैज्ञानिक के कमरे का दरवाजा पूरा खुला पड़ा था।
आमतौर पर यह बंद रहता था और इस पर ताला लगा रहता था और यदि कोई उसके कमरे में चला जाता तो वह गुस्सा होता था।
यह मौका इतना अच्छा था कि इसे छोड़ा नहीं जा सकता था।
उन्होंने दरवाजे से झाँक कर देखा, कोई दिखाई नहीं दिया और उन्होंने जाँच करने का निश्चय किया।
बिस्तर ठंडा था जो यह दर्शाता था कि अवश्य ही वैज्ञानिक को उठे हुए काफी समय हो चुका था। और इससे भी अजीब यह कि वे कपड़े और पट्टियाँ जिन्हें वह सदा पहने रहता था, कमरे में बिखरे पड़े थे।
Passage-17: (Page 23)
All of a sudden Mrs Hall heard a sniff close to her ear.
A moment later the hat on the bedpost leapt up and dashed itself into her face.
Then the bedroom chair became alive.
Springing into the air it charged straight at her, legs foremost.
As she and her husband turned away in terror, the extraordinary chair pushed them both out of the room and then appeared to slam and lock the door after them.
अचानक श्रीमती हॉल को अपने कान के पास सँघने की आवाज सुनाई दी।
एक क्षण बाद बिस्तर के सिरहाने रखा हैट अपने आप उछला और उसके चेहरे से जा टकराया।
इसके बाद शयन कक्ष की कुर्सी सजीव हो उठी।
हवा में उछलते हुए वह सीधे टाँगें आगे करके उसकी ओर बढी।
जैसे ही वह और उसका पति डर कर मुड़े, उस असाधारण कुर्सी ने उन दोनों को कमरे से बाहर धकेल दिया और तब यह उनके बाहर जाने के बाद दरवाजा बंद करके ताला लगाती हुई प्रतीत हुई।

Mrs Hall almost fell down the stairs in hysterics.
She was convinced that the room was haunted by spirits and that the stranger had somehow caused these to enter into her furniture.
“My poor mother used to sit in that chair,” she moaned.
“To think it should rise up against me now!”
श्रीमती हॉल मूर्छित होकर सीढ़ियों में लगभग गिर ही गई। थी।
उसे विश्वास था कि कमरे में आत्मा का निवास था और अजनबी ने किसी प्रकार उस आत्मा को उसके फर्नीचर में
प्रविष्ट करा दिया था। “मेरी बेचारी माँ इस कुर्सी पर बैठा करती थी,” वह सिसकी।
यह सोचकर कि वह अब मेरे विरुद्ध उठ खड़ी हुई है।”
Passage-19: (Page 23)
The feeling among the neighbours was that the trouble was caused by witchcraft.
But witchcraft or not, when news of the burglary at the clergyman’s home became known, the strange scientist was strongly suspected of having had a hand in it.
Suspicion grew even stronger when he suddenly produced some ready cash, though he had admitted not long before that he had no money.
पड़ोसियों का मानना था कि यह समस्या किसी जादू-टोने से पैदा हुई है।
किंतु जादू-टोना था या नहीं, जब पादरी के घर में लूट का समाचार पता चला तो अजीब वैज्ञानिक का इसमें हाथ होने की शंका प्रबल हो गई।
संदेह और भी गहरा हो गया जब उसने अचानक कुछ नगदी पेश की जबकि उसे यह स्वीकार किए अधिक समय नहीं हुआ था कि उसके पास पैसे नहीं थे।

The village constable was secretly sent for.
Instead of waiting for the constable, Mrs Hall went to the scientist, who had somehow mysteriously appeared from his empty bedroom.
“I want to know what you have been doing to my chair upstairs,” she demanded.
“And I want to know how it is that you came out of an empty room and how you entered a locked room.”
गाँव के सिपाही को गुप्त रूप से बुलावा भेजा गया।
सिपाही के आने की प्रतीक्षा करने के बजाय श्रीमती हॉल वैज्ञानिक के पास गई जो कि किसी प्रकार रहस्यमयी रूप से खाली शयनकक्ष से प्रकट हुआ।
“मैं जानना चाहती हूँ कि तुम ऊपर मेरी कुर्सी के साथ क्या करते रहे हो?” उसने पूछा।
“और मैं जानना चाहती हूँ कि तुम एक खाली कमरे में से बाहर कैसे आए और एक ताला बंद कमरे में तुम कैसे अंदर गए।”
Passage-21: (Page 23) The scientist was always quick-tempered; now he became furious. “You don’t understand who or what I am!” he shouted. “Very well – 111 show you.” Suddenly he threw off bandages, whiskers, spectacles, and even nose. It took him only a minute to do this. The horrified people in the bar found themselves staring at a headless man!
वैज्ञानिक को सदैव ही जल्दी गुस्सा आ जाता था, वह क्रोधित हो गया। तुम नहीं समझती कि मैं कौन या क्या हूँ।” वह चिल्लाया।
बहुत अच्छा-मैं तुम्हें दिखा दूंगा।” अचानक उसने पट्टियाँ, गलमुच्छे, चश्मे और यहाँ तक कि नाक भी उतार फेंकी।। उसे ऐसा करने में केवल एक ही मिनट लगा। बार में डरे हुए लोगों ने अपने आपको एक बिना सिर के आदमी की ओर घूरते हुए पाया।
Passage-22: (Page 23)
Mr Jaffers, the constable, now arrived and was quite surprised to find that he had to arrest a man without ahead.
But Jaffers was not easily prevented from doing his duty.
If a magistrate’s warrant ordered a person’s arrest, then that person had to be arrested, with or without his head.
अब सिपाही, श्रीमान जैफर्स, पहुँच गया और यह देख कर बहुत हैरान था कि उसे एक बिना सिर के आदमी को गिरफ्तार करना था।
किंतु जैफर्स को अपना कर्तव्य निभाने से इतनी आसानी से नहीं रोका जा सकता था।
यदि किसी न्यायाधीश ने किसी आदमी की गिरफ्तारी को वारंट जारी किया हो तो उसे उस आदमी को गिरफ्तार करना ही पड़ता था, चाहे उसका सिर हो या न हो।
Passage-23: (Page 23 & 24)
There followed a remarkable scene as the policeman tried to get hold of a man who was becoming more and more invisible as he threw off one garment after another.
Finally a shirt flew into the air, and the constable found himself struggling with someone he could not see at all.
Some people tried to help him, but found themselves hit by blows that seemed to come from nowhere.
जैसे ही सिपाही ने उस आदमी को पकड़ने का प्रयास किया जो कि एक के बाद दूसरा कपड़ा उतारते हुए अधिकाधिक अदृश्य होता जा रहा था; वहाँ एक असाधारण दृश्य पैदा हो गया।
अंत में एक कमीज हवा में उड़ी, और सिपाही ने अपने आपको एक ऐसे आदमी से संघर्ष करते पाया, जिसे वह बिल्कुल भी नहीं देख सकता था।
कुछ लोगों ने उसकी सहायता करने का प्रयास किया, किंतु उन्हें घूसों की मार खानी पड़ी जो उन्हें पता नहीं था कि कहाँ से आ रहे थे।
Passage-24: (Page 24)
In the end Jaffers was knocked unconscious as he made a last attempt to hold on to the unseen scientist.
There were nervous, excited cries of “Hold him!”
But this was easier said than done.
Griffin had shaken himself free, and no one knew where to lay hands on him.
अंत में जब जैफर्स ने अदृश्य वैज्ञानिक को पकड़ने का एक अंतिम प्रयास किया तो उसे मुक्का मारकर बेहोश कर दिया गया।
वहाँ घबराहट भरी, उत्तेजक चीखें थीं, “उसे पकड़ो।”
किंतु ऐसा कहना आसान था और करना कठिन।।
