The Tiger King was the king of Pratibandapuram. At the time of his birth, royal astrologers predicted his death to be caused by a tiger. When he grew up, he hunted ninety-nine tigers. For killing so many tigers, he got the name ‘Tiger King’.

How did the prediction of the astrologers about the King of the Pratibandapuram come true?
प्रतिबन्दपुरम् के राजा के बारे में ज्योतिषियों की भविष्यवाणी किस प्रकार से सच्ची सिद्ध हुई?
Answer:
It was the royal astrologers’ prediction that the Tiger King would be killed by a tiger. When the King came of age, he sat on the throne of the state. He banned hunting tigers by anybody in his state except for himself. He killed the first tiger and showed his bravery to the state astrologer. The astrologer told him that he might kill ninety-nine tigers the same way but the hundredth tiger might bring about his death. The King decided to kill one hundred tigers. When he shot the hundredth tiger, the bullet whizzed by the tiger and it fell down in a faint but was not killed. The King thought that he had killed the hundredth tiger. Some days later on his son’s birthday, he bought a wooden toy-tiger. A sliver from its rough surface pierced into his hand. Ultimately the infection proved fatal. Thus Tiger King died and the prediction proved true.

Once a British officer visited Pratibandapuram. He wished to hunt tigers. But the Maharaja refused permission as he had resolved to hunt all tigers by himself. The British officer sent a message that the Maharaja could do the actual killing. He just wanted a photograph of himself holding the gun and standing over the tiger’s carcass. The Maharaja did not agree to even this. Now for preventing a British officer from fulfilling his desire, the Maharaja stood in danger of losing his kingdom. The Maharaja sent some fifty expensive diamond rings to the officer’s wife to choose one or two out of them. But she kept all the rings. The Maharaja had to pay a bill for 3 lakh rupees. Hence, by sending precious diamond rings as a gift, he came out of the crisis.
एक बार एक अंग्रेज अधिकारी प्रतिबन्दपुरम में भ्रमण पर आया। उसने व्याघ्रों के शिकार की इच्छा प्रकट की। लेकिन महाराजा ने अनुमति नहीं दी क्योंकि उन्होंने स्वयं सभी व्याघ्रों का शिकार करने का निश्चय किया था। अंग्रेज अधिकारी ने संदेश भिजवाया कि वास्तव में महाराजा व्याघ्र को मार सकते हैं। वह बस मृत व्याघ्र के ऊपर बन्दूक पकड़कर खड़े हुए अपना एक फोटो चाहता था। परन्तु महाराजा इस पर भी सहमत नहीं हुए। अब एक अंग्रेज अधिकारी को उसकी इच्छापूर्ति करने से रोकने के कारण महाराजा के सामने अपना राज्य छिनने का खतरा उत्पन्न हो गया। महाराजा ने उस अधिकारी की पत्नी के पास हीरे की लगभग 50 महँगी अंगूठियाँ भेजीं, उनमें से एक या दो चुनने के लिए आग्रह किया गया था। लेकिन उसने वे सभी अंगूठियाँ रख लीं। महाराजा को उनका 3 लाख रुपये का बिल चुकाना पड़ा। इस प्रकार, हीरे की कीमती अंगूठियाँ उपहारस्वरूप भेजकर वह उस संकट से बाहर निकले अर्थात् उबर सके।

The Maharaja was sunk in the gloom as he was unable to locate the hundredth tiger. But he was determined to kill the hundredth tiger and so remained in the forest and did not return to his kingdom. After a few days, he saw an old tiger, The Dewan had brought this tiger from the People’s Park in Madras and kept it hidden in his house. To protect his job, he had secretly brought the tiger to the forest for the Maharaja’s hunt. The Maharaja shot at the tiger and it fell down. The Maharaja took it to be dead and left for his capital. Later on, the hunters found that the tiger was not dead. It had just fainted because of fear. The Maharaja’s bullet had missed its mark. Now, one of the hunters shot the tiger. This time the tiger was killed.

A safe ecology will guarantee a safe life on the earth. But the Earth today is a different planet from what it used to be. Forests have been destroyed. Roads have been made through mountains. Glaciers are shrinking. Toxic gases are polluting the environment. Global warming poses a great danger to all life on Earth. We are inviting a number of natural calamities such as drought, floods, cyclones, etc. The depletion of the Ozone layer has put our survival in danger. In the same way, tigers are unique animals that play a pivotal role in the health and diversity of an ecosystem. The loss of tigers from their natural habitat has resulted in irreversible changes in natural ecosystems. We know that tiger is at the top of the food chain and the decline of large predators may lead to over-abundance of herbivores such as deer, which in turn has repercussions on tree regeneration and seed dispersal. Its effect can be seen on the food web. It is causing long term changes in natural flora and fauna. This could result in loss of species. Extinction of tigers leads to the destruction of forests. Answer:
The story is about a king who causes death to a hundred tigers. He does so because a tiger has been predicted as the cause of his death. In his pride of power, he wantonly kills these animals. The proud king bans tiger hunting in the state by anyone except himself. He does so to belie the prediction of his death by a tiger. But in spite of his hunting so many tigers, the prediction comes true. One day he is playing with his son with a wooden tiger. Its rough surface has sharp slivers of wood. One such sliver pierces his hand. The wound later takes his life. Thus a small wooden tiger becomes the cause of his death. This is a fine example of dramatic irony.

In the story ‘The Tiger King’, we see innocent tigers being killed at the whim of a king. Just to prove the prediction of the astrologers wrong, the proud king does so. The story is told in a humorous tone. The author is nowhere seen preaching against the killing of animals. But indirectly, he seems to have sympathy for the innocent animals who are subjected to the willfulness of human beings. He seems to comment that a killer of innocent animals is never spared by nature. The death of the king caused by a wooden tiger seems to be a revenge for his heartless act of killing tigers. It looks to be a lesson for those who are cruel to innocent animals and treat them at their will.

Maharaja’s employees are always afraid of losing their job. The Maharaja very easily gets angry and dismisses them from their jobs. So they always obey him because of fear. Even the higher officers like Dewan tremble with fear in the King’s presence. They lose their confidence in answering the King’s questions. The employees’ jobs are always at stake. Many officers lost their jobs during his hunt of the hundredth tiger. The Maharaja orders his Dewan to find out a tiger at any cost. Being afraid of losing his job, the poor Dewan brings a tiger from the zoo. The King misses his last target (the hundredth tiger). The hunters instead of telling him the truth, shoot the tiger themselves. Otherwise, they might lose their jobs.
