The Thief’s Story Theme Of The Lesson
This story tells us how a thief changed into a good man. The centre point of the story is Hari Singh, who is a thief. He is the narrator of the story. He is fifteen years old. During a wrestling match, he meets Anil. Anil is about 25 years old. He is a simple and honest man. He is a man of helping nature. He takes Hari Singh to his house and gives him shelter. He knows that Hari Singh saves money from the daily supplies, but he says nothing. He makes him learn to cook and write his name. One day Anil brings a small bundle of notes after selling a book to a publisher. Hari Singh decides to steal the money. When Anil is sleeping, he takes the money and reaches the station. But his conscience stops him from running away. He drenches in the rain and sits down under the clock tower. Now his mind changes and he doesn’t want to break Anil’s faith. He returns and puts the money back under Anil’s mattress. Next morning Anil gives him a fifty rupee note and tells that now he will pay him regularly.

The narrator started to save money: For the household, the narrator had to purchase the day’s supplies. In that he would make a profit of about a rupee a day. Anil knew it, but he never spoke about it.
Their increasing faith in each other: Within a month, they had much faith in each other. Now Anil had given him a separate key of the room. The narrator started to build good relation with Anil. But during this month, Anil did not give him money.
Anil had a small bundle of notes: One day Anil came home with a small bundle of currency notes. He told the narrator that he had sold a book to a publisher. Now Hari had a negative feeling. He decided to steal the notes as Anil did not give him anything for his work.
The narrator steals the money and his internal feelings: At night when Anil was sleeping, the narrator stole the notes and left the room. He reached at the station. The Lucknow Express was leaving the station slowly. He could enter the compartment easily, but his conscience stopped him. Walking through the market, he reached the maidan and was thinking continuously about the behaviour of different people when they lose something. The greedy man showed fear and the rich man showed anger. The poor showed acceptance but he knew that Anil would show sadness for breaking his trust.
The narrator’s analysis and his return: Just then, heavy rain began and he was drenched. He took shelter under the clock tower. It was midnight. The notes that he had tied with the string of his pyjama had become completely wet. He thought it was very difficult to cheat Anil as he had faith in him. He was teaching him to read and write which could make him a very respectable man. So he decided to go back.
The end of the story: Hurriedly, he went back. He was very nervous. When he reached there, Anil was still sleeping. He put the notes back under the mattress. Next morning Anil woke up first and prepared tea. He gave him a fifty-rupee note. The narrator was fearful to be caught. Anil told him that he would now pay him regularly and would start teaching him writing sentences. The narrator smiled.

एक दिन, अनिल को एक पत्रिका के प्रकाशक से 600 रुपये प्राप्त हुए। उसने इस राशि को गद्दे के नीचे रख दिया। - At night Hari Singh stole the money and ran to the station. But his conscience stopped him from boarding a train to Lucknow and he missed the train.
एक रात हरि सिंह ने ये रुपये चुरा लिए तथा स्टेशन की ओर चल पड़ा। लेकिन उसकी अंतरात्मा ने उसे ऐसा करने से रोक दिया तथा उसकी ट्रेन निकल गई। - He walked to the clock tower and got wet in the rain. After thinking too much, he came back and put back the money under the mattress.
वह घंटा घर की तरफ बढ़ा तथा वर्षा के पानी में भीग गया। काफी सोचने के बाद, वह वापस लौट गया तथा उसने चुराए गए पैसे को पुनः गद्दे के नीचे रख दिया। - His mind got changed. Next morning he woke up late and found that Anil had already made the tea.

“So do you,” he replied, which put me off for a moment because at that time I was rather thin.
“Well,” I said modestly, “I do wrestle a bit.”

I made the tea in the morning and then would take my time buying the day’s supplies, usually making a profit of about a rupee a day.
I think he knew I made a little money this way but he did not seem to mind.

It’s easy to rob a greedy man because he can afford to be robbed;
but it’s difficult to rob a careless man sometimes he doesn’t even notice he’s been robbed and that takes all the pleasure out of the work.

His face was clear and unlined; even I had more marks on my face, though mine were mostly scars.

The train had still to pick up speed and I should have been able to jump into one of the carriages, but I hesitated for some reason I can’t explain—and I lost the chance to getaway.

When the train had gone, I found myself standing alone on the deserted platform.
I had no idea where to spend the night.
I had no friends, believing that friends were more trouble than help.
And I did not want to make anyone curious by staying at one of the small hotels near the station.
The only person I knew really well was the man I had robbed.
Leaving the station, I walked slowly through the bazaar.
जब रेलगाड़ी जा चुकी थी तो मैंने स्वयं को वीराने प्लेटफार्म पर अकेला खड़ा पाया।
मुझे नहीं सूझ रहा था कि रात कहाँ बिताई जाए।
यह सोचकर कि मित्र सहायता करने की अपेक्षा मुसीबत बन जाते हैं; मेरा कोई मित्र भी नहीं था।
और स्टेशन के निकट छोटे होटल पर रुककर मैं किसी में जिज्ञासा भी पैदा नहीं करना चाहता था।
एकमात्र आदमी जिसे मैं बहुत अच्छी तरह जानता था, वही था जिसे मैंने लूटा था।
स्टेशन को छोड़कर मैं बाजार में धीरे-धीरे चला।

In my short career as a thief, I had made a study of men’s faces when they had lost their goods.
The greedy man showed fear; the rich man showed anger; the poor man showed acceptance.
But I knew that Anil’s face, when he discovered the theft, would show only a touch of sadness.
Not for the loss of money, but for the loss of trust.
चोर के रूप में, मैं अल्पकाल में ही अध्ययन कर चुका था कि सामान के चोरी हो जाने के बाद लोगों के चेहरे कैसे हो जाते हैं।
लालची लोग भय दिखाते थे; धनी लोग गुस्सा करते थे; गरीब लोग स्वीकृति प्रकट करते थे।

I found myself in the maidan and sat down on a bench.
The night was chilly it was early November -and a light drizzle added to my discomfort.
Soon it was raining quite heavily.
My shirt and pyjamas stuck to my skin, and a cold wind blew the rain across my face.
मैंने स्वयं को मैदान में पाया और मैं एक बेंच पर बैठ गया।
रात अत्यधिक ठंडी थी-यह नवंबर की शुरुआत थी-और हल्की बूंदाबाँदी ने कष्ट बढ़ा दिया था।
जल्दी ही भारी बरसात होने लगी।

I went back to the bazaar and sat down in the shelter of the clock tower.
The clock showed midnight.
I felt for the notes.
They were damp from the rain.
मैं बाजार वापस गया और घंटा घर की आड़ में बैठ गया।
घंटा आधी रात दिखा रहा था।
मैंने नोटों को टटोला।
वे बरसात में भीग गए थे।

In the morning he would probably have given me two or three rupees to go to the cinema, but now I had it all.
I couldn’t cook his meals, run to the bazaar or learn to write whole sentences any more.
सुबह वह मुझे सिनेमा के लिए शायद दो या तीन रुपये देता । किंतु अब मेरे पास सारे के सारे थे।
अब मैं और अधिक उसका खाना नहीं पका सकता था, बाजार नहीं जा सकता था और पूरे वाक्य नहीं लिख सकता था।
Passage-24: (Page 3)
I had forgotten about them in the excitement of the theft.
Whole sentences, I knew, could one day bring me more than a few hundred rupees.
It was a simple matter to steal-and sometimes just as simple to be caught.
But to be a really big man, a clever and respected man was something else.
I should go back to Anil.
I told myself, if only to learn to read and write.
मैं चोरी के आवेग में उसके बारे में भूल गया था।
पूरे वाक्य, मैं जानता था कि एक दिन मुझे कुछ सौ रुपये से अधिक कमाने में सक्षम बना सकते थे।
चोरी करना आसान था-और कई बार पकड़े जाना भी
आसान था। लेकिन वास्तव में एक बड़ा आदमी बनना, एक चतुर और आदरणीय आदमी बनना कुछ अलग बात थी।
मुझे अनिल के पास वापस जाना चाहिए।
मैंने स्वयं को कहा, यदि मैं पढ़ना और लिखना सीखना चाहता था।
Passage-25: (Page 3)
I hurried back to the room feeling very nervous, for it is much easier to steal something than to return it undetected.
I opened the door quietly, then stood in the doorway, in clouded moonlight.
Anil was still asleep.
I crept to the head of the bed and my hand came up with the notes.
I felt his breath on my hand.
I remained still for a minute.
Then my hand found the edge of the mattress, and slipped under it with the notes.
मैं बहुत अधीर होकर जल्दी-जल्दी वापस कमरे की ओर चल दिया, क्योंकि किसी चीज को चुरा लेना आसान है, जबकि उस चीज को बिना पता चले वापस करना कठिन।
मैंने धीरे-से दरवाजा खोला और बादलों भरी चाँदनी में द्वार मार्ग में खड़ा हो गया।
अनिल अभी भी सोया हुआ था।
मैं बिस्तर के सिरहाने तक खिसक कर गया और मेरा हाथ नोटों के साथ आया।
मैंने उसकी साँसें अपने हाथ पर अनुभव की। मैं कुछ मिनट स्थिर रहा।
तब मेरे हाथ ने गद्दे का सिरी खोज निकाला और नोटों के साथ इसके नीचे खिसक गया।

I awoke late next morning to find that Anil had already made the tea.
He stretched out his hand towards me.
There was a fifty-rupee note between his fingers.
My heart sank.
I thought I had been discovered.
मैं प्रात: देर से उठा और पाया कि अनिल ने पहले ही चाय बना ली थी।
उसने अपना हाथ मेरी ओर बढ़ाया।
उसकी अंगुलियों के बीच एक 50 रुपये का नोट था।
मेरा दिल बैठ गया। मैंने सोचा कि मेरी चोरी पकड़ी जा चुकी है।
Passage-27: (Page 3)
“I made some money yesterday,” he explained.
“Now you’ll be paid regularly.”
My spirits rose.
But when I took the note, I saw it was still wet from the night’s rain.
“Today we’ll start writing sentences,” he said.
मैंने कल कुछ रुपये कमाए थे,” उसने कहा।
“अब तुम्हें नियमित रूप से पगार मिलेगी।”
मेरा उत्साह बढ़ा। किंतु जब मैंने नोट पकड़ा, तो मैंने देखा कि यह रात की बरसात से अभी भी भीगा हुआ था।
“आज हम वाक्य लिखना शुरू करेंगे,” उसने कहा।

He knew.
But neither his lips nor his eyes showed anything.
I smiled at Anil in my most appealing way.
And the smile came by itself, without any effort.
वह जानता था।
लेकिन न तो उसके ओठों ने और न ही उसकी आँखों ने कुछ प्रदर्शित किया।
मैं अपने सर्वाधिक आकर्षक अंदाज में अनिल की ओर मुस्कुराया।
और मुस्कराहट अपने-आप आई, बिना किसी प्रयत्न के।
