What are the key functions of the Parliament? Class 8

The Parliament's key functions are:

Constitutional functions:

  1. Amending the Constitution.
  2. Electing the President and Vice President.


Law-making functions:

  1. Making laws on subjects listed in the Union and Concurrent lists.
  2. Introducing and passing bills (draft laws) which become Acts after the President's assent.


Executive Accountability functions:

  1. Holding the Council of Ministers (Executive) accountable.
  2. Questioning the government (during Question hour)
  3. Reviewing government actions and policies through Parliamentary Committees.


Financial functions:

  1. Approving and allocating government spending (Budget).
  2. Examining 'Money Bills', taxation and expenditure.
